No. 6 Tritons Split Saturday's Doubleheader with Seawolves to Even Series at 2-2

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The sixth-ranked Tritons split with Sonoma State in a doubleheader at Triton Softball Field on Saturday afternoon. With the outcome, UC San Diego moves to 9-2 on the season and 2-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. Sonoma State moves to 3-6 overall and 2-2 in conference action.

Game One: Sonoma State 5, UC San Diego 4
Nine different Tritons accounted for a total of 11 team hits in game one. Danielle Stedman and Brittney Ross-Smith were both 2-for-3 at the plate.

The Tritons attacked first to get the offense rolling. The top of the lineup pieced together productive at-bats and generated the initial run production.

After two scoreless innings, Keila Bosinger reached on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Mikaila Reyes doubled down the left field line, which rolled past the Seawolves' defender to score Bosinger all the way from first.

Sonoma State would answer in the fourth as a result of a leadoff double and a single up the middle.

With a tie score (1-1) heading into the bottom half of the inning, Stedman beat out a ball slapped to the third baseman to get the Triton rally started. Clarissa Reynoso deadened a sacrifice bunt to move Stedman into scoring position and Ross-Smith executed the plan. The senior stroked a double to the left center gap to score Stedman.

But the pressure would not stop there. Danica Kazakoff laid down a bunt-single, advancing to third after the Seawolves smothered a called squeeze play. Silencing the momentum shift, Aguirre drilled a single up the middle to score Kazakoff and gave UC San Diego a 3-1 advantage.

Clarissa Reynoso added the fourth run for the Tritons en route a sacrifice fly to deep center field in the bottom of the fifth. Isabel Lavrov scored, providing the Tritons with their last run of insurance for the remainder of the contest.

Robyn Wampler appeared in control all game. Heading into the seventh inning, the lefty had surrendered just three hits, one run and struck out five.

However, the Seawolves retaliated in the top half of play, scoring four more runs. Four hits, including two home runs and a double, as well as a walk detailed the inning for Sonoma State. UC San Diego was later retired in a row to finish the game.

The Tritons out-hit the Seawolves 11 to seven, but a total of seven left on base would eventually come back to haunt the home team.

Game Two: UC San Diego 3, Sonoma State 0
In game two, UC San Diego scored first as they had in every game on the weekend.

In the bottom of the third Sophia Real singled to right field. With a clutch piece of hitting, Aguirre doubled to right center to score her. It was the redshirt sophomore's third double of the 2020 season.

More Triton runs were generated in the sixth inning. Real found a way on through a five pitch walk. Next, Aguirre grounded out to first base but it was enough to push Real to second. Bosinger connected on a pitch she drove up the middle to put runners on the corners.

A Seawolves' defensive mishap scored Real and a few batters later Sherriah Harrington blasted an RBI double to the right center gap.

The Tritons entered the top of the seventh with a three-run cushion. Alanna Phillips tossed 6.1 solid innings, allowing zero runs on six hits. In addition, the senior struck out three.

Wampler entered in the seventh to close out the last two batters. She recorded her second save of the year, striking out one and handling a ground ball right back at her to help guide UC San Diego to another victory.
