LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 18 University of California San Diego softball team took the series over Stanislaus State 3-1 after winning both games of day two of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) four-game series. Friday's game scores were 5-2 and 10-1, both in favor of the Tritons.
With the results, UC San Diego improves to 16-5 overall and 7-5 in conference play, as the Warriors fall to 6-11 overall and 5-7 in CCAA action.
Game Three: UC San Diego 5, Stanislaus State 2
The Tritons generated the first run of the game. After freshman
Sophia Real reached on a four-pitch walk to lead off the inning, she was shifted to second on a sacrifice bunt from redshirt sophomore
Bobbi Aguirre. Senior
Mikaila Reyes ripped a hard ground ball that skipped off the Warrior shortstop and into center field, allowing Real to round third hard and trot into home plate safely.
In the top of the third, the Warriors grabbed two runs of their own, both which were unearned, after two hits and one error from the Triton defense.
But the Triton bats were ignited shortly after. Real singled up the middle and junior
Sherriah Harrington launched her fifth double of the season to straight away center to bring Real all the way around. Fellow classmate
Isabel Lavrov, replicating her performance from Friday, roped a single up the middle to score two more. The two-RBI single enabled the blue and gold to retake the advantage, 4-2.
On the mound, left-handed hurler
Robyn Wampler was dealing once again. Following the Warriors' two-run inning in the third, the junior was un-phased and retired nine in a row.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Tritons scored again thanks to an RBI single from
Clarissa Reynoso to left field. Lavrov found home plate to increase the run margin to three.
In a total of six innings pitched, Wampler struck out five and surrendered five hits. In command the entire contest, Wampler only walked one batter. With the victory, she improves to 8-2.
With a three-run cushion, feshman
Kaia Simpson entered in the seventh to close out the game. In five batters faced, she gave up two hits and struck out one, en route her third save of the season.
Game Four: UC San Diego 10, Stanislaus State 1 (5 Inn.)
UC San Diego had four players with multi-hit performances. Real, Aguirre, Reyes, and Lavrov were all 2-for-3 at the plate. Nine RBIs were dispersed among eight Tritons.
UC San Diego again scored first as three hits from the top of the lineup proved to be effective. Real poked one up the middle, while Reyes singled deep in the five-six hole. Lavrov, who had come up clutch in various moments of the series, roped a chopper to second base, too hot to handle and around came Real.
More damage evolved in the second inning for the Tritons. After a quick two outs, the blue and gold refused to go down in order. Senior
Danica Kazakoff passed the bat to the top of the lineup upon reaching on an error. Then, the team would produce four consecutive singles. Real, Harrington and Reyes were credited with RBIs to bring UC San Diego to a 4-0 advantage.
Offensively, the most destruction came in the bottom of the fifth for the home team. The Tritons scored five runs to end the contest on a mercy-rule. Freshman
Justice Salcido secured both her first collegiate hit and RBI with a single through the left side. To highlight the run production, Aguirre blasted a two-RBI homer over the left field fence to walk it off and send her team home with another victory on the day.
Alanna Phillips received the win having tossed 3.1 innings and gave up four hits before senior
Dominique Acosta entered to finish out the third. Acosta faced one batter and threw just three pitches as the Triton defense turned a double play to end the inning.
The UC San Diego defense was errorless all game. Freshman
Kaia Simpson threw one inning and tallied a strikeout as well.
