LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The No. 6 University of California San Diego softball team continued tournament play at the Desert Stinger this afternoon with two contests against brand new opponents. In game one, the Tritons found their third win of the weekend, defeating Oklahoma Baptist, 6-1. Later in the day, UC San Diego extended its overall record to 4-0 after beating West Texas A&M, 4-0.
It was the first time in program history that the Tritons matched up against the two institutions.
Game 1: UC San Diego 6, Oklahoma Baptist 1
The top four batters of the UC San Diego lineup, including freshman
Sophia Real, redshirt sophomore
Bobbi Aguirre, sophomore
Keila Bosinger, and junior
Sherriah Harrington, proved to be too much for the Bison. Each Triton contributed multi-hit games (2) and compiled eight out of the team's 10 total hits.
Right-handed pitcher
Alanna Phillips nearly went the distance in six innings. The senior tallied three strike outs and gave up no earned runs.
The scoring began in the bottom of the third for UC San Diego.
In her debut start as a Triton, leadoff batter Real reached safely on a bunt to third base. To follow, Aguirre drove one up the middle to put runners on first and second. After a wild pitch advanced both Tritons into scoring position, Harrington successfully executed on a called squeeze play and Real slid into home safely.
A few batters later, with one out, senior
Danielle Stedman slapped a ball to third base. The play resulted in a fielder's choice but Aguirre crossed home plate to put UC San Diego ahead, 2-0.
In the top of the fourth inning, Oklahoma Baptist retaliated. In what seemed to be a quick 1-2-3 inning for Phillips, the Bison rallied with two outs. Two singles, a walk and a Triton error brought the score within one.
But the bats came alive in the sixth. Kazakoff singled to left field, Real was hit by a pitch and Aguirre grabbed her second single of the day to set up Bosinger with the bases juiced. On a 1-0 count, Bosinger blasted a deep fly to center field to clear the bases.
The Tritons would head to the seventh with a five-run lead with right-handed pitcher
Kaia Simpson on the bump. The freshman picked up her first collegiate inning of play, helping UC San Diego to another triumph.
Game 2: UC San Diego 4, West Texas A&M 0
Left-handed pitcher
Robyn Wampler earned the start for game two and was brilliant for seven innings. The junior gave up just four hits in 28 batters faced, on top of four strikeouts.
Once again, in the bottom of the third, the top of the lineup produced the damage. With Kazakoff on second, Aguirre poked a pitch up the middle. A throwing error by the Buffalo's left fielder allowed Kazakoff and Aguirre to trade places, in which Harrington further capitalized on the mistake. A rope to left field from the Chula Vista native put a crooked number on the board for the Tritons at 2-0.
Second baseman
Isabel Lavrov acquired the next two RBIs for UC San Diego, one in the fourth and another in the sixth. Set in the eighth spot, Lavrov found herself in the right place at the right time, as the Tritons set the table for the junior to produce in multiple situations.
Wampler dazzled in the seventh to secure the Tritons their first shutout of 2020.
"I think we are executing more and getting into a good grove of playing with one another, but defensively we still have to cut down on our errors," said Head Coach
Patti Gerckens.
"Robyn pitched a great game against West Texas A&M. She had a much better outing today. She was crisp, she hit her spots, and she kept the other teams off balance, so it was good to see her come back strong," said Gerckens. "Keila is coming up clutch in situations and looking very confident in the box. She loves the pressure and continues to execute."
