Fencing Team Announces Addition of Eight New Tritons

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC San Diego fencing team has announced the addition of eight scholar-athletes that will join the program as true freshmen for the 2020-21 academic year.

"We are really excited to welcome our freshman class this year with eight new additions to the team," said third-year UC San Diego head coach Juan Ignacio Calderon. "Future aerospace engineers, marine biologists, economists, neuroscientists, communication professionals, and cognitive scientists will be taking on challenges on and off the strip with a strong team of Tritons around them to help them achieve their dreams. Simply, that is what this is all about!"

In 2020, UC San Diego automatically qualified five fencers for the National Collegiate Fencing Championships. Unfortunately, the remainder of the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic just one week before the event. Five Tritons earned All-America recognition from the United States Fencing Coaches Association. The women's team won its fifth Western Fencing Conference (WFC) title in the last six years and freshman Shawn Kim was the West Region Saber Champion. Overall, 11 Tritons earned All-WFC accolades.
