LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of California San Diego women's basketball team (RV) was in control throughout the night as it secured an 81-65 win over Humboldt State at RIMAC Arena this evening. The Tritons' winning streak increases to eight while they remain atop the conference standings.
With the victory, the Tritons improve to 16-4 on the season and 12-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action. The Jacks fall to 11-9 overall and 7-8 in conference play.
Sydney Sharp powered the Tritons to an early advantage over the Jacks in the first quarter. Shooting 5-5 in the first 10 minutes, including 4-4 from long range, Sharp's 14 points helped UC San Diego grab a 36-28 lead at the end of the first period.
The Tritons' momentum continued into the second quarter. As a team, UC San Diego shot 73% (8-11) in the 10 minutes before halftime. At the halfway mark, the Tritons held a 49-35 advantage.
After scoring 23 points in the second quarter, the Tritons again put up 23 in the third quarter to add to their lead. They cooled down in the fourth quarter, but were able to clinch an 81-65 win.
UC San Diego had four players put up double-digit points in the victory.
Sharp led the way with 20 points, which were a season high for her. The North Tustin native also collected nine rebounds, which was another team best.
Tyla Turner followed with 17 points as she faced her twin sister Tyra's team. Turner's four assists were a game high.
Julia Macabuhay and
Brianna Claros both finished the night shooting 60% from beyond the arc (3-5). Macabuhay contributed 16 points, while Claros scored 11.
As a team, UC San Diego shot a season-high 58% (14-24) from distance. The Tritons' 14 triples were the second most in the CCAA this season, behind their mark of 15 from Nov. 24.
The Tritons will remain at home on Saturday. UC San Diego will host Stanislaus State at 5:30 p.m. as it celebrates Girls and Women in Sports Day. Come out at 4 p.m. to RIMAC Arena to take part in the Girls and Women in Sports Day Festival prior to the game.
