SAN FRANCISCO—The University of California San Diego women's basketball team (RV) topped San Francisco State, 66-47, on the road tonight for its sixth-consecutive victory.
With the win, the Tritons improve to 14-4 overall and 10-3 in conference play to remain atop the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings. The Gators fall to 1-15 on the season and 1-12 in conference action.
After a back and forth first quarter, the Tritons were off to a slow start in the second quarter. They drastically turned things around though as they trailed by five points with six minutes until halftime. UC San Diego put together a 13-4 run for the remainder of the period to gain a 32-28 lead at halftime.
Julia Macabuhay led the efforts, putting up 10 points during the critical run.
UC San Diego was in command in the third quarter, extending its lead as it held the Gators to just 11 points. The Tritons again were strong defensively in the fourth quarter, allowing just eight points from the Gators and clinching a 66-47 win.
Macabuhay's 22 points were a game best, as she finished the night shooting 53% (8-15) and was a perfect 3-3 at the free throw line. This was the sophomore's seventh game with 20 or more points this season.
Sydney Brown was the night's leader in rebounds. She collected 10 boards to go along with her 19 points for her first double-double as a Triton.
Stephanie Moore knocked down all three of her field goal attempts on the night. She also tacked on a free throw to finish the game with eight points, one shy of her collegiate high.
"We're excited about our win tonight," said Head Coach
Heidi VanDerveer. "We had to grind it out. We started a little slow, but our defense picked up. Julia was really dynamic offensively, and it was fun to see Syd Brown come out and play with a lot of energy, getting the double-double and hitting her shots. I'm proud of our team for coming out in the second half and establishing a competitive identity."
The Tritons will return to action on Saturday. UC San Diego will face Sonoma State at 1 p.m. in Rohnert Park.
