No. 23 Tritons Sweep CCAA Weekly Awards, Wampler and Wing Collect the Honors

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Robyn Wampler and Alyssa Wing of the No. 23 University of California San Diego softball team earned weekly accolades from the California Collegiate Athletic Association on Tuesday afternoon. Wampler garnered Pitcher of the Week honors, while Wing was named Player of the Week. The two led the Tritons to a four-game sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay over the weekend.

With the award, Wampler has earned back-to-back Pitcher of the Week titles. Through the end of the 2018 season and the start of the 2019 season, Wampler has received five of the last six Pitcher of the Week accolades, with teammate Alanna Phillips earning the other.

Wampler was brilliant during the Tritons' sweep of the Otters, taking home the win in all four contests. In game one of the series, the sophomore pitched a nine-inning complete game, allowing just one earned run. Her efforts in the pitcher's circle stifled the Otters long enough for the Tritons to grab a 2-1 walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth.

For the remaining three games of the series, Wampler did not surrender an earned run. In game two, the Berkeley native pitched five innings, only allowing one hit to the Otter batters. Wampler also picked up six strikeouts along the way, helping the Tritons to another walk-off victory. UC San Diego defeated Cal State Monterey Bay, 4-3, in the 10th inning.

It was another one-hitter from Wampler in game three. Over seven innings, the pitcher showed her control. Wampler struck out five without walking a single batter, ultimately guiding the Tritons to a 2-1 win.

In game four, Wampler kept her cool during a high-pressure situation. The lefty was brought in with a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning. Again, Wampler gave up just one hit and no earned runs, giving the Tritons the chance to capture a 6-2 conference victory.

While Wampler took care of things in the pitcher's circle, Wing led the Tritons' offensive efforts. Wing batted .556 over the four games, a team best, and came through in clutch situations.

In game one, the Otters took a 1-0 lead in the fifth, and the Tritons answered in the bottom of the inning. With runners on second and third, Wing drove a single into left field for the crucial tying run.

The junior's top performance came in the second game of the series. Wing went 3-for-4, with her final hit being the game winner. Leading off the 10th inning, Wing drilled a home run over the left field fence to secure the Tritons' walk-off victory.

The Torrance native showed her patience at the plate throughout the series, drawing three walks to help the Tritons' efforts.

Wing was also perfect in the infield. Recording eight putouts and 10 assists, the second baseman recorded a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.

Wing, who spent her first two years at El Camino College, is in her first season with the Tritons. This is her first CCAA Player of the Week award.

Wampler, Wing, and the Tritons return to action on Friday, as they begin their four-game series with Stainslaus State at 3 p.m.
