No. 21 Tritons to Host Chico State for Winter Whiteout

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 21 University of California San Diego women's basketball team is back home this week, returning to conference play against Chico State.

WINTER WHITEOUT INVADES RIMAC
All fans are encouraged to wear white as the Winter Whiteout comes to RIMAC Arena Thursday night. Free snow cones and hot chocolate will be available to all fans wearing white, while supplies last.
 
The first 500 UC San Diego students attending Thursday night's contest will also receive a free Winter Whiteout T-shirt. Game admission is always free for UC San Diego students with a valid ID.
 
POLLS
At the national level, the Tritons were ranked 21st in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Top 25 Coaches Poll. In D2SIDA's regional breakdown, UC San Diego ranked sixth.
 
Chico State was not ranked in either poll.

MACABUHAY HONORED
Julia Macabuhay earned the title of UC San Diego Athlete of the Week for her performances at the Malika Sports Tours Oahu Thanksgiving Classic. First, Macabuhay put up 14 points in the No. 14 Tritons' 60-54 win over No. 11 Minnesota State Moorhead. The next day, the sophomore scored a team-best 16 points as the Tritons faced Hawaii Pacific (RV). Across the two contests, Macabuhay also contributed eight assists and seven rebounds.
 
MOST RECENT MATCHUPS
The Tritons won both of their games against Chico State last season. At home, UC San Diego came away with a resounding 81-47 victory on Nov. 24, 2018. Later in the season, the Tritons were victorious again with a score of 68-52 at Chico State on Jan. 24.
 
CONFERENCE LEADERBOARD
Julia Macabuhay ranks second in the CCAA in points per game (19.3) and third in assists per game (5). Tyla Turner also holds a spot near the top of the conference leaderboard, ranking third with a .880 free throw percentage.
 
PLAYING CAREFULLY
The Tritons are averaging just 10.3 turnovers per game, which is the third-lowest in the nation. UC San Diego's opponents are averaging 14.6 turnovers per contest.
 
HEAD COACH HEIDI VANDERVEER
A former WNBA coach, Olympic team scout and assistant for the legendary Pat Summitt at the University of Tennessee, Heidi VanDerveer enters her eighth season as the UC San Diego head coach in 2019-20. VanDerveer was named the CCAA Coach of the Year for the fourth-consecutive season in 2018-19 as well as the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) West Region Coach of the Year for the second-straight year.

The Tritons will return to action at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 17 as they take on Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson.

All UC San Diego home men's and women's basketball games will be broadcast live on ESPN3, making the Tritons one of just three NCAA Division II programs to have all of its home basketball games air live on ESPN Networks.

BIG WEST BOUND
UC San Diego is in its 20th and final year playing as an NCAA Division II team. In July of 2020, the entire athletics program will begin a four-year transition to NCAA Division I, culminating in full DI status as a member of the Big West Conference for the 2024-25 academic year. At that time, all sports will be eligible for conference and NCAA postseason play.
