No. 6 Tritons to Begin Conference Play This Week

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 6 University of California San Diego women's basketball team is back home this week as it opens conference play against crosstown rival Cal State San Marcos. Then, the Tritons head to Cal State San Bernardino over the weekend.

POLLS
At the national level, the Tritons were ranked sixth in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Top 25 Coaches Poll and the D2SIDA Women's Basketball National Poll. In D2SIDA's regional breakdown, UC San Diego ranked second.
 
Cal State San Bernardino is not ranked in either poll. In the D2SIDA poll, Cal State San Marcos was receiving votes.

MACABUHAY HONORED
Julia Macabuhay earned the title of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 17. Macabuhay led the Tritons to a pair of wins over Western Washington, 76-68, and Seattle Pacific, 79-67, at the West Region Crossover Classic over the weekend. The sophomore scored 45 points across the two contests. For her efforts, she was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
 
MOST RECENT MATCHUPS
The Tritons did not lose in any of their games against the Cougars or Coyotes last season. UC San Diego went 3-0 against Cal State San Marcos, including a matchup in the CCAA Tournament. Against Cal State San Bernardino, the Tritons were 2-0.
 
HEAD COACH HEIDI VANDERVEER
A former WNBA coach, Olympic team scout and assistant for the legendary Pat Summitt at the University of Tennessee, Heidi VanDerveer enters her eighth season as the UC San Diego head coach in 2019-20. VanDerveer was named the CCAA Coach of the Year for the fourth-consecutive season in 2018-19 as well as the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) West Region Coach of the Year for the second-straight year.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
Following the Tritons' two games, UC San Diego will head to Hawaii for the Malika Sports Oahu Thanksgiving Classic. The Tritons will face Minnesota State-Moorhead and Hawaii Pacific at the classic.

BIG WEST BOUND
UC San Diego is in its 20th and final year playing as an NCAA Division II team. In July of 2020, the entire athletics program will begin a four-year transition to NCAA Division I, culminating in full DI status as a member of the Big West Conference for the 2024-25 academic year. At that time, all sports will be eligible for conference and NCAA postseason play.
