LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of California San Diego women's basketball team fell to California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rival Cal State East bay, 71-57, at RIMAC Arena Saturday evening. The loss snapped a 13-game win streak for UC San Diego.
Despite the loss, The Tritons remain atop the CCAA standings with a 13-2-conference record (17-4 overall). UCSD is two games ahead of the Pioneers, who improved to 14-8 overall and 11-4 in the league.
Cold shooting doomed the Tritons in the second half, as they hit just eight of 31 attempts overall and went 2-for-13 from behind the three-point line. Those numbers came after shooting 44.1 percent (25-34) in the first half.UCSD led by two, 33-31 going into the locker rooms.
The Pioneers collected a 51 percent shooting percentage overall and made 10-of-22 three-point shots. CSUEB out-scored the Tritons 40-24 in the second half.
For UCSD, Mikayla Williams posted a game-high 18 points while also grabbing seven rebounds and two blocks. Senior Cassie MacLeod notched a game-high eight rebounds and collected two steals.
Shomari Harris and Kayley Hslung led CSUEB in scoring, with 16 points each. Hslung also tallied three steals.
A three-pointer to open the second half gave the Pioneers a lead they would not relinquish. Five three-pointers in the third frame opened up the lead for CSUEB as they led, 53-44 heading into the fourth.
In the fourth frame, UCSD came within seven points of the visitors twice, with a three-pointer from Beth Mounier and a layup from Williams, however it wasn't enough as the Pioneers pulled away to seal the win.
The Tritons and Wildcats split the regular season series as UCSD won, 59-47, on Jan. 7 in Hayward.
UC San Diego hits the road for two games next week. The Tritons travel to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday, Feb. 9. On Saturday, Feb. 11, UCSD will face Cal State LA. Both games are set to start at 5:30 p.m.
