UCSD Battles to Beat Humboldt State and Clinch At Least A Share of CCAA Title

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women's basketball team won its 20th overall and 16th California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) game with a 64-55 triumph over Humboldt State Saturday. The win captured UC San Diego its second straight CCAA regular season championship.

With one league game left to play, UCSD (20-5, 16-3 CCAA) remains atop the standings, one and a half games ahead of second place Cal State East Bay (14-4). A win at Cal State San Bernardino on Feb. 23 would give the Tritons the regular season title outright.

Junior Dalayna Sampton totaled 19 points and notched nine rebounds for UCSD while senior Beth Mounier and sophomore Joleen Yang tallied 13 and 11 points, respectively. In her final regular season home game, senior Haley Anderson collected three points and handed out two assists.

The Lumberjacks' Tyra Turner Catherine Rees and Kindall Murie all scored in double-digits with 15, 10 and 10 points, respectively.

UCSD shot 50 percent (7-of-14) from beyond the three-point line while going 18-of-46 overall (39.1). The Jacks shot just 16-of-48 (33.3) overall.

With 3:29 remaining in the second quarter, the host and visitors remained tied at 22 before UCSD used an eight-point run to leap ahead of the Jacks at halftime.

The Triton defense held the visitors to just nine points in the second quarter to give UCSD a 31-24 advantage heading into the locker rooms. 

The Tritons carried their momentum into the second half outscoring the visitors 33-31.

UCSD gained a 15-point lead, its largest of the game, with eight minutes remaining in the quarter. Mounier and Sampton each collected six points in the fourth quarter.

With the loss, Humboldt State fell to 7-18 overall and 6-12 in the conference.

Tip-off at Cal State San Bernardino is set for 5:30 p.m.
