LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego softball team concluded a four-game series with Cal State San Marcos Sunday afternoon at Triton Softball Field. UC San Diego won the first game 9-2 before picking up a 4-3 win in game two.
UCSD opens its 2017 season behind an eight-game win streak with an 8-0 overall record. The Tritons also remain perfect in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play after sweeping CSUSM to earn a 4-0 record.
The Cougars fall to 0-7 overall and 0-4 in the CCAA.
Freshman Mikaila Reyes totaled four RBI on the day while sophomore Caitlyn Weisner tallied three. Kelsi Maday stole three bases and collected an RBI. Kendall Baker notched two RBI behind six hits.
GAME ONE
A three-run homer into center field from Weisner in the first inning gave the Tritons a quick lead to start the game. Maddy Lewis capped the inning with a double that scored a runner to give UCSD a 4-0 lead in the first frame.
The Cougars' Karla Bernal scored an unearned run in the third inning to put CSUSM on the board.
The final run for the Cougars came in the fourth inning when Gabriela Arizaga made it across home plate.
In the fifth inning, the Tritons scored five runs to extend their lead to 9-1. A one-run single from Reyes got things started before Weisner scored off a fielding error from the Cougar second baseman. Kendall Woken followed with an RBI single that brought home Reyes and Baker capped the scoring with a single to right field that scored two runners.
Lauren Brown pitched 6.0 innings for UCSD and earned her third win of the season. She only allowed one earned run. Freshman Lizzy Beutter came on in relief for Brown and allowed no runs or hits in one inning of work.
Ashley Dagenais and Karen Roman split time on the mound for CSUSM. Dagenais was credited with the loss after allowing five earned runs in five innings of work.
GAME TWO
UCSD scored all four of its runs in the first inning and held on to win the game and the series against the Cougars. Maday opened up the scoring with an RBI single that scored Baker. Reyes followed with a big double to center field that scored three runners and ultimately led to the Tritons victory.
CSUSM tried to come back with runs in the second, third and fifth innings, however it wasn't enough as the UCSD defense held off the Cougars to win.
Milana Casillas and Beutter split time on the mound in game two. Casillas was credited with the win after 4.1 innings of work. She gave up all three runs. Beutter came in relief for Casillas and earned the save after pitching 2.2 innings and allowing no runs.
UCSD will host Azusa Pacific for a doubleheader Saturday, Feb. 18. The first game is set to start at 12 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, the Tritons welcome Adelphi to Triton Softball Field for a doubleheader at 1:30 p.m.
