LOS ANGELES – The University of California San Diego women's basketball team dropped a 75-69 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) decision at Cal State LA Saturday night.
Despite the loss, UC San Diego remains in first-place in the CCAA standings with a 14-3 conference record (18-5 overall). The Tritons currently sit one game ahead of Cal State East Bay (16-8, 13-4) and have already clinched a berth in the upcoming CCAA Tournament.
UCSD only made 37.8 percent (28-74) of its shots, while Cal State LA countered at 45.3 percent (24-53).
Senior Beth Mounier tallied a game-high 24 points including five three-pointers. Junior forward Dalayna Sampton collected a team-high 12 rebounds and two steals. She tallied 20 points and made 9-of-14 shots from the field. This marks her third double-double of the season.
"I thought we had a good week of preparation," said head coach Heidi VanDerveer. "The outcome wasn't what we wanted, we didn't make plays when we needed to but I thought overall we had good energy from some different players and we will continue to work hard to get better".
The Golden Eagles used a balanced scoring attack with four players scoring in double-digits to secure the win.
Neither team gained more than a three-point advantage in the first quarter as the game remained knotted at 16 heading into the second frame.
Cal State LA took a 35-25 lead in the second quarter before UCSD used a seven-point run to bring the game within two, 37-35 at half.
The hosts led by as much as 11 points in the third frame but the Tritons narrowed the gap with a jumper followed by back-to-back layups from Sampton to round out the quarter, 57-50.
UCSD came within five points of the Golden Eagles in the final quarter, however it wasn't enough as Cal State LA edged the Tritons for the victory.
The Tritons return home to host two games Feb. 17-18. UCSD welcomes Cal Poly Pomona Friday, Feb. 17. Saturday, Feb. 18, Humboldt State will visit RIMAC Arena. Both games are set to start at 5:30 p.m.
