Balanced Scoring Attack Propels UCSD to Victory Over Cal State Dominguez Hills

CARSON, Calif. - Three players scored in double figures for the University of California San Diego as the women's basketball team defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 67-49 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play Thursday night at the Torodome.

The win marks head coach Heidi VanDerveer's 100th victory as a Triton. She currently holds a 100-41 record at UCSD.

"I am very proud of our win tonight," said VanDerveer. "I thought we competed well and it was an excellent team win. We will carry this momentum into Saturday's game against Cal State LA."

UC San Diego remains on top of the CCAA standings with a 14-2 conference record (18-4 overall). With the loss, CSUDH falls to 6-16 overall in 3-12 in CCAA play.

Sophomore Shandiin Armao had a career night for UCSD, totaling a team-high 13 points and adding eight rebounds. Dalayna Sampton and Mikayla Williams scored in double-digits with 12 points each. On the defensive side, senior Cassie MacLeod tallied a game-high 10 rebounds.

As a team, the Tritons finished with a 40.6 shooting percentage (28-69) and held the hosts to just 29.1 percent (16-55).

The Tritons and Toros exchanged points back-and-forth during the first quarter, before a layup from Joleen Yang gave UCSD a slight 12-10 lead heading into the second frame.

UCSD outscored the hosts 19-4 in the second quarter, holding them to a single field goal, to gain a 31-14 advantage heading into halftime. Armao and freshman Sydney Sharp tallied seven and six points, respectively, during the frame.

The Toros made three three-pointers in the third quarter to cut the Triton lead down to 13 points, 46-33, heading into the fourth frame.

In the fourth quarter, UCSD took a 63-38 lead, its largest of the game, with 3:04 showing on the clock. The Tritons held the hosts to a 28.6 shooting percentage during the quarter to secure their 18th victory.

Simone Thompson led CSUDH in scoring behind a game-high 14 points while Jocelyn Diaz led the Toro defense with nine rebounds.

UCSD will return to the court Saturday, Feb. 11, at Cal State LA (12-12, 9-7) for a game set to start at 5:30 p.m.
