TURLOCK, Calif. – In its 11th-straight victory, the University of California San Diego women's basketball team defeated California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) foe Stanislaus State, 68-55, at Fitzpatrick Arena Friday evening.
UC San Diego rose to 15-3 overall and 11-1 in conference play, remaining in first place. Stan State fell to 10-11 overall and 8-4 in the CCAA.
The Tritons' 11-game win streak marks their longest since they opened the 2011-12 campaign with 26-straight wins.
Hot shooting from the UCSD offense gave the visitors a steady lead throughout the contest as the Tritons finished with a 52.2 (24-46) percentage and held an advantage for the entire game.
Senior Cassie MacLeod grabbed her third double-double of the season with game-highs in points (19) and rebounds (10). Classmate Beth Mounier tallied 12 points while junior Dalayna Sampton added 10.
The Tritons held the Warriors to only 31.3 (20-64) percent shooting. Stanislaus State's Lizzy Alexander led the team with 15 points while Erika Larsen grabbed seven rebounds.
UCSD scored eight unanswered points in the opening frame to jump ahead. The hosts used two layups from Larsen to cut the lead, however, the Tritons held a commanding 10-point advantage going into the second quarter.
A quick start saw UC San Diego go up, 30-11, early in the second. MacLeod made two layups during the stretch. The Tritons went 7-13 (53.8 percent) in shooting during the frame to hold a decisive, 37-22, lead heading into the locker room.
UCSD earned its biggest lead of the game, 42-22, with 7:22 showing in the third quarter. However, the Warrior's used a six-point run to cut the score to 46-36 as time expired.
The hosts brought the score within seven, 48-41, early in the fourth, however MacLeod and Mounier tallied five points each in the quarter to seal UCSD's 15th win of the season.
“This was a great win for us,” said UCSD head coach Heidi VanDerveer. “We worked hard all week to prepare for their pressure and I thought we showed a lot of poise with several players stepping up and making big plays”.
UC San Diego rounds out the weekend with a 5:30 p.m. game against Chico State (12-6, 7-5) on Saturday, Jan. 28. The Wildcats defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 63-54, Friday night for their fourth win in their last five games.
