Overtime Unkind For Tritons, Knocked Out of CCAA Tournament by Cal State East Bay in Classic

STOCKTON, Calif. - Jamie Katuna's layup attempt rimmed out and a putback by Farrah Shokoor missed as time expired, and the 19th-ranked UC San Diego women's basketball team was eliminated from the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament in the semifinal round by Cal State East Bay, 79-77 in overtime, Friday night at Stockton Arena.

The second-seeded Tritons had their 10-game win streak snapped in dropping to 24-4 overall, and are left to await their fate for the NCAA Championship, with the selection show set for 7 p.m. PT on Sunday, March 6. The third-seeded Pioneers improve to 26-4 and will play top seed Cal State Dominguez Hills for the CCAA Tournament crown Saturday at 7:35 p.m. in a rematch of the 2015 final.

UCSD was led by its star senior tandem of Katuna and Shokoor, who combined for 56 of the Tritons' 77 points. Katuna scored a game-high 30 points, shooting 65 percent (13-20) from the floor and 40 percent (2-5) from behind the arc just three nights after pouring in 29 in a first-round home win. Shokoor, the CCAA Player of the Year, recorded her 17th double-double of the season with 26 points, on 53.3 percent (8-15) shooting, and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Cassie MacLeod came off the bench and chipped in 11 points. CSUEB had five different players scoring in double figures. Madison Craig and Tori Breshers were the Pioneers' top scorers with 16 and 15 points, respectively.

As a team, UCSD did not miss any free throws, going 12-12 from the charity stripe, and shot 51.7 percent (30-58) from the field. The Tritons, who came in averaging just 12.8 turnovers a game, committed a season-worst 23. CSUEB made UCSD pay for its mistakes with 22 points off of turnovers. Neither team had a clear advantage, as the game went back-and-forth with a total of 13 ties and 14 lead changes.

The Pioneers started the overtime period with a 7-0 run to lead, 79-72. UCSD got a layup from Katuna and a trey from junior guard Beth Mounier with 39 seconds remaining to close within two, but could not get another score after that.

The Tritons led by five, 72-67, with 2:06 remaining in the fourth quarter. CSUEB drew three fouls on three consecutive possessions and knocked down five straight free throws to tie the game. UCSD then had a chance to win it with 20 ticks left in regulation, but could not get a look at the basket.

UCSD started the second half down by three, 32-29. The Tritons outscored the Pioneers 23-18 in the third quarter, getting 13 points from the duo of Shokoor and Katuna, to go into the fourth period up by two.

CSUEB grabbed its biggest lead of the game, 32-24, with 2:46 remaining in the second frame, but a successful MacLeod and-one and a Shokoor layup cut the margin heading into the break.

Following Saturday's championship game, Katuna was named to the All-CCAA Tournament Team.

Sunday's NCAA selection show will be streamed live beginning at 7 p.m. PT at NCAA.com. The NCAA West Regional runs Friday-Monday, March 11-14, with the winner punching a ticket to the NCAA Championship, held in Sioux Falls, S.D.
