LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego softball team took down Stanislaus State 11-2 in five innings in the second game of a doubleheader to complete the four-game series sweep over the Warriors in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup Saturday at Triton Softball Field. UCSD defeated Stanislaus State 8-4 in game one.
The Tritons are now 9-1 in 2016 and are a perfect 4-0 in conference play. The Warriors drop to 3-6 overall and 0-4 in the CCAA.
GAME ONE - UC San Diego 8, Stanislaus State 4
After trailing by one run, 2-1, the Tritons scored three in the bottom of the fourth and fifth and one in the sixth for the 8-4 triumph.
UCSD scored the first run of the game. In the bottom of the first inning, sophomore outfielder Kelsi Maday brought home senior outfielder Taylor Abeyta on a double to left center.
Stanislaus State answered back in the top of the second as Cassidy Duke nailed a two-run home run.
The Tritons scored three each in the fourth and fifth inning. Senior catcher Emma Schneider doubled to left field to start the fourth frame. Freshman infielder Maddy Lewis doubled to left center to bring home Kendall Woken, who pinch ran for Schneider. Abeyta singled to center field to plate sophomore outfielder Emily Sklencar for the third UCSD run of the inning as the Tritons took a 4-2 lead.
Sophomore catcher Lauren Sanders singled to bring home Maday in the bottom of the fifth. Sklencar lined one to left center and scored Schneider for the second run of the frame. Senior shortstop McKenna Clewett hit an RBI double to make it a 7-2 advantage for UCSD.
Stanislaus State's Duke hit her second two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Triton lead to three.
UCSD added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to prevail by four.
Senior lefty Lexi Edwards (4-0) picked up the win with three strikeouts.
GAME TWO - UC San Diego 11, Stanislaus State 2
The Tritons scored two in the first frame and nine in the second to take the win, 11-2.
UCSD pushed two in the first as Maday tripled to bring home Kendall Baker. Schneider then plated Maday on a single to center.
The Tritons took advantage of two errors and five walks from the Warriors to score nine runs in the second. Abeyta singled to score Sklencar, who reached on an error. Baker brought home Clewett, who also reached on an error, with a single to left field. Sanders picked up two RBI's as she singled to score Baker and Abeyta.
The Warriors pushed one across home in the fifth, but the Triton lead was ultimately insurmountable. Freshman righty Lauren Brown (4-0) got the win in four innings of work. Senior righty Hannah Duarte pitched one inning in relief.
UCSD will have a day off before taking on Adelphi University, out of Long Island, New York, on Presidents' Day in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
