No. 22 UCSD Overcomes 15-Point First-Quarter Deficit to Defeat Chico State, 68-47

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 22nd-ranked UC San Diego women's basketball team bounced back after being down 21-6 at the end of the first quarter and downed Chico State 68-47 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup Friday at RIMAC Arena.

With the win, the Tritons move to 19-3 overall and 14-2 in conference play. Chico State drops to 10-11 overall and 5-10 in the CCAA.

Senior forward Farrah Shokoor led UCSD with 15 points. Junior guard Beth Mounier and senior guard Jamie Katuna chipped in 14 and 11 points, respectively. Shokoor and junior guard Haley Anderson each had seven rebounds each. No Wildcat scored in double figures. Sammy DeHart was Chico State's top scorer with seven points.

The Tritons started slow as Chico State took a 21-6 lead at the end of the first period.

UCSD started coming back in the second frame and cut the margin all the way down to three after Mounier's three-pointer with three seconds left before the intermission. The Tritons trailed 32-29 at halftime.

UCSD limited Chico State to just four points in the third frame. The Tritons took the lead, 36-34, as Mounier knocked down her second trey of the game. DeHart was able to tie the game, 36-36, with 6:19 remaining. It would be the closest the Wildcats would get as UCSD closed out the third quarter on an 18-0 run, ignited by a layup from sophomore forward Gigi Olelewe. The Tritons led 54-36 going into the final period.

UCSD outscored Chico State 14-11 in the fourth frame to prevail by 21 points, 68-47.

The Tritons will host fifth-place Stanislaus State in their next contest on Saturday, Feb. 13. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
