Tritons Trounce Coyotes, 82-48

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Cassie MacLeod scored a game-high 20 points to lead the University of California San Diego women's basketball team to a convincing 82-48 victory over league opponent Cal State San Bernardino Friday night at RIMAC Arena.

With its second-straight win, UC San Diego improved to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CSUSB, which had won its previous four games, dropped to 5-2 on the year and 2-1 in league play.

The Tritons shot 51 percent (31-61) and held the Coyotes to 28 percent (18-65). The visitors made just two of 13 three-point attempts. UCSD owned a 48-34 advantage in rebounds.

It was a season-high point total for MacLeod and just one off her career-best. She was 9-for-10 from the field with a three-pointer and three rebounds, all in just 14 minutes of play.

Two other Tritons hit double figures in points as Mikayla Williams finished with 15 plus two blocks and Marcella Hughes was just behind with 14. Dalayna Sampton led all players with seven rebounds.

Ashley Carson led Cal State San Bernardino with 16 points and four steals, while Mya Johnson grabbed six boards.

UCSD finished the first quarter with a 24-13 advantage. MacLeod made five of six shots and Williams made all three of hers to give the Tritons a 56 percent (10-18) in shooting. Solid and consistent defense limited the Coyotes to only 25 percent (4-16).

In the second quarter, the Tritons only gave up six points to Cal State San Bernardino while adding another 22 to their own total. A perfect three-for-three from MacLeod and two three-pointers from Hughes and Mounier helped to extend the lead to 46-19. At the half, with just nine minutes of total playtime, MacLeod had scored 18 points on the Coyotes.

In the third, San Bernardino came out with an aggressive offense, making seven of their 18 field goal attempts. UCSD responded by sinking three more from behind the arc and tallying up a shooting percentage of 46 (6-13) to put them up 64-34.

The fourth quarter saw UCSD limit CSUSB to just 33 percent (5-15) in shooting while earning 46 percent (7-15) themselves. Hughes landed two more from three-point range to set her total at a team-high of four made three-pointers. The Tritons finished the game with a conclusive 34-point lead.

The Tritons' 34-point margin of victory was their largest since Jan. 7, 2016 when they won by 59 (93-34) at San Francisco State.

UC San Diego hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-6, 0-2) in CCAA action on Monday, Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. The Toros were narrowly defeated, 90-89, at Cal State LA Friday.
