No. 17 UCSD Falls to Seattle Pacific at Crossover Classic, 62-45

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The 17th-ranked University of California San Diego women's basketball team fell to Seattle Pacific by a final score of 62-45, Friday at the Crossover Classic, hosted by Western Washington at Whatcom Community College Pavillion.

With the loss, the Tritons drop to 2-1 on the season. The Falcons improve to 3-0.

Junior guard Taylor Tanita was UCSD's leading scorer with 10 points to go along with four assists. Junior forward Dalayna Sampton had eight points and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Joleen Yang pitched in eight points as well. SPU's Courtney Hollander recorded 13 points and four rebounds. Erica Pagano scored a game-high 14 points for the Falcons.

The Tritons, who came into the game shooting 51.2 percent from the floor and 45.3 percent from behind the arc shot a mere 34 percent (17-50) from the field and 22.7 percent (5-22) from three-point range. UCSD lost the turnover battle 22-10 and were outscored 22-4 on points off turnovers.

With the score tied 7-7 in the middle of the first, SPU closed the quarter on a 17-8 run which included three treys to lead 24-15 after 10 minutes.

The Falcons opened up their lead even more in the second period, outscoring UCSD 15-10. The Tritons briefly closed the margin to nine, 26-17, on a jumper from freshman Stephanie Moore.  SPU led 39-25 at halftime.

UCSD started to mount a comeback in the third quarter, limiting the Falcons to just eight points and scoring 14 points. Tanita hit a three-pointer with seven seconds left as the Tritons trailed 47-39 with one period remaining.

UCSD shrunk the margin to six, 47-41, with two free throws from freshman forward Mikayla Williams. However, SPU closed the game with a 15-4 run to prevail by 17.

The Tritons will conclude the Crossover Classic on Saturday, Nov. 19 with a game against Western Washington at 7:30 p.m.
