LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's basketball team never trailed and took down Humboldt State 85-73 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action Friday at RIMAC Arena.
With the win, the Tritons improve their conference record to 4-1 and are 9-2 overall. The Lumberjacks drop to 6-6 overall and 3-2 in conference games.
UCSD cleaned up the boards well, outrebounding HSU 52-37, with 19 of the season-high 52 rebounds coming on the offensive end.
Senior guard Jamie Katuna led the way for the Tritons with a career-high 29 points. Junior guard Beth Mounier and junior forward Cassie MacLeod also scored in double figures with 19 and 13 points, respectively. Redshirt sophomore guard Taylor Tanita dished out a game- and career-high 10 assists and senior forward Farrah Shokoor brought down a game-best 19 rebounds. Amanda Kunst and Kiana Brown paced the Jacks with 19 and 12 points, respectively.
UCSD opened up to an 11-point lead, 17-6, after freshman guard Joleen Yang hit a free throw following a layup in transition and was fouled in the process for the and-one opportunity. The Tritons led 21-12 at the end of the first quarter.
UCSD started the second quarter with eight unanswered to take a 17-point advantage, 29-12, early in the period. HSU answered back and cut the margin to seven, 32-25, with 2:52 remaining before the intermission. The Tritons would end the quarter with a 12-2 run, capped off by a Haley Anderson three-pointer, to go into halftime leading 44-27.
In the third quarter, the Lumberjacks closed the gap to seven, 46-39, after a Jessica Johnson trey. From there, UCSD outscored HSU 19-7, capped off by two Katuna free throws, to give the Tritons their biggest lead, 65-46.
The Lumberjacks started the final period with a 9-2 run to make it an 11-point game, 69-58. It would be the closest HSU would get, as the UCSD lead was insurmountable. The Tritons cruised the rest of the way for a 12-point win.
