LA JOLLA, Calif. - Six UC San Diego fencers earned podium finishes in NCAA West Regional action Saturday at RIMAC Arena. The top fencers in the West were putting forth their best efforts in hopes of a spot in the upcoming NCAA Championships.
Competing alongside the Tritons were Air Force, Caltech and Stanford. The UCSD men and women are receiving votes in the latest CollegeFencing360.com national poll. The Stanford men are ranked 10th in the country and the Cardinal women are receiving votes.
Sean Callaghan found himself on the podium with a third-place finish in men's epee. He compiled an 8-2 record in pool action and went 9-3 overall. Stanford's Benjamin Riviere was the gold medalist while James Salem of Air Force was second. Adam Campbell-Kruger took the final podium spot, placing fourth.
Men's foil had a stacked field. Stanford Olympian and national champion Alex Massialas won gold. Air Force All-American Alex Chiang was the silver medalist and UCSD's David Hadler won bronze. Hadler, who holds a No. 13 junior world ranking, went 12-2 in his bouts, falling only to Massialis and Chiang.
In men's saber, Air Force won gold and silver in Ryan Redhead and Emiliano Kaptain. Stanford's David Beam took bronze. Drew Dickinson was the top placer for the Tritons, coming in fifth.
Triton Nicole Chiang also earned a podium spot during the morning session, placing third in women's epee. She was 9-3 overall on the day. Stanford owned the top-two finishes in Rebecca Rose and May Peterson. UCSD's Laura Hawkins was fourth.
Air Force was strong in women's foil as Mary McElwee finished first and was followed by teammate Madeleine Girardot in second. Stanford's Eliza Klyce was third. Sophia Holmqvist earned the top spot for the Tritons, placing fifth.
Megan Gesner was UCSD's top finisher in women's saber, grabbing the fourth podium position. Again, Stanford went 1-2 with Stephanie Wang in first and Alex Rohan in second. Alyssa Hofilena from Air Force was third.
The event also served as the individual championships for the Western Fencing Conference. The top four finishers in each weapon earned all-conference accolades.
It was the second time in three seasons that UCSD had hosted the regional.
Selections for the 2015 NCAA Fencing Championships will be announced on Tuesday, March 10, at 1 p.m. PT. The event will be held March 19-22 at Ohio State's French Field House in Columbus, Ohio.
Last season, sabreur Travis Tibbitts represented UC San Diego at the NCAA Championships.
