UCSD Defeated by Cal State San Bernardino in CCAA Tournament First Round

STOCKTON, Calif. - Farrah Shokoor's double-double wasn't enough as the UC San Diego women's basketball team fell by a score of 69-58 to Cal State San Bernardino Thursday in first round action of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship Tournament at Stockton Arena.

Fourth-seeded UCSD concludes its season at 18-10. CSUSB, the tourney's fifth seed, improves to 19-8 and moves on to face top-seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills (24-6) in a semifinal Friday at noon.

After a strong first half in which the Tritons made 50 percent (13-26) of their shots, the team couldn't keep its momentum going and managed just 34 percent (11-32) shooting in the second stanza.

The Coyotes improved their shooting as the game went on, going from 43 percent (13-30) in the first half to 54 percent (13-24) in the second. They also finished with a 38-29 advantage in rebounding.

Cal State San Bernardino made 14 of its 15 free throws, while UC San Diego went to the line just nine times, making five. Both teams turned the ball over 15 times, 10 of those coming in the first half for each squad.

"I thought that today's game was a lot like our first two games with them, which we split," said third-year UCSD head coach Heidi VanDerveer. "I thought it was very physical, very intense. Every possession counted and they made more plays than we did.

"I think they are bigger at every position. Their three, four and five really challenge us. They have a lot of length and they're very disciplined. They make you work for everything you get."

Shokoor totaled 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for her 15th double-double of the season. The junior forward also added four assists, three steals and a pair of blocks.

"I thought it was going to be a hard match-up for us," said Shokoor. "We don't physically match up. We don't need to box other people out as much because we're bigger and can rebound over them, but this team, you really need to get a body in."

Beth Mounier also hit double-figures for the Tritons, collecting 11 points. McKennan Bertsch, Miranda Seto and Dana Webster all finished with eight points apiece.

For CSUSB, Chelsea Barnes led all players with 22 points on 11-for-19 shooting. Adriana Brodie notched a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards, while Brianna Harden had 13 points.

UCSD opened the game on a 6-0 run with Haley Anderson and Stephanie Yano netting back-to-back three-pointers. The team's largest lead of the contest came in the first half when Shokoor made a layup at 11:28 to put the Tritons up by seven, 16-9.

UCSD stayed ahead until the 8:39 mark when a Harden layup gave CSUSB its first lead, 17-16.

With 10 seconds left in the opening half, Mounier hit a three to lift the Tritons to a 32-30 lead heading into the locker room. She had seven points in the half.

In the second half, a 13-4 run by the Coyotes had them leading by seven, 54-47, with 10:19 left. The Tritons came right back with a 9-2 run of their own. It was capped by Mounier, whose layup at 5:48 tied the game at 56-56.

However, CSUSB out-scored UCSD 13-2 the rest of the way to clinch the victory. Seven of those points came on free throws.

"I thought we got good shots, we didn't make enough of them," said VanDerveer. "Sometimes we got a little rushed from the defensive philosophy that they played and then we didn't get enough stops and rebounds on the other end.

"We have a very young team and hopefully we'll learn from it and be ready to come back and compete for a championship. That's our goal."

The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Tritons, who were making their eighth consecutive appearance in the league tournament.
