Tritons Take Down Warriors, 72-53

TURLOCK, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's basketball team defeated Cal State Stanislaus 72-53 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup on Saturday at Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. The Tritons limited the Warriors to just 32.8 percent shooting (20-61) and won the rebound battle 43-26.

With the win UCSD improves to 12-9 overall and 10-6 in the CCAA while CSUS drops to 6-15 overall and 4-13 in the conference.

Forward McKennan Bertsch got things started as her two quick layups gave the Tritons a 4-0 advantage.

However, the Warriors would counter back and make four consecutive three-pointers, one each from Riley Holladay and Camille Roberts and two from Briana Cotton, to give CSUS a 16-8 lead with 10:37 remaining in the first half.

UCSD answered the Warriors onslaught with an 9-0 run to get back on top, 17-16, on a pair of Farrah Shokoor free throws. The Tritons limited CSUS to just five points for the rest of the period as they went into halftime with a nine-point advantage, 30-21.

UCSD stretched the margin to 10 to lead 33-23 after a three-point basket from Haley Anderson to start the second half.

The Tritons nabbed a 17-point advantage, 51-34, after a mid-range jumper from Miranda Seto and a layup from Cassie MacLeod with 11:22 left to play.

The gap would be insurmountable as UCSD did not let the Warriors within 10 points for the remainder of the match to cruise to a 19-point victory.

The Tritons were definitely the more physical team as they won the rebounding battle, outscored CSUS 30-22 in the paint and shot 90.9 percent from the charity stripe on 33 attempts compared to the Warriors 45.5 percent on only 11 attempts.

"Our team, after losing last night, came out with good energy and a sense of urgency. We got to the free throw line and we were very aggressive and outrebounded Stanislaus by 17," said UCSD head coach Heidi VanDerveer.

The Tritons were led by Shokoor who grabbed her 11th double-double of the season with 14 points and a game-best 19 rebounds. Bertsch added 10 points on 71.4 percent (5-7) shooting.

Briana Cotton led CSUS with a game-high 15 points.

"Anytime you win on the road, it's big, especially in February." VanDerveer said.

The Tritons will continue on the road next week and take on San Francisco State on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
