Tritons Cruise Past Sonoma State For Third Straight Win, 79-55

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's basketball team defeated Sonoma State 79-55 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup on Saturday at The Wolves' Den. The Tritons shot 47.4 percent (27-57) from the floor and 50 percent (11-22) from behind the arc and limited SSU to 28.3 percent (17-60) shooting and 23.5 percent (4-17) from three-point range.

UCSD improves its winning streak to three games and have won five of their last six. The Tritons are now 14-9 overall and 12-6 in the conference while the Seawolves drop to 6-16 overall and 4-14 in the CCAA.

UCSD struggled to knock down shots and quickly fell behind to SSU 11-5 to start the game, only managing a three-pointer from Haley Anderson and a Farrah Shokoor layup.

A Dana Webster basket would ignite a 22-6 Triton run that included four makes from behind the arc, two from Taylor Tanita and one each from Cassie MacLeod and Beth Mounier, to lead the Seawolves 27-17 with 5:49 left in the first half.

UCSD stretched the margin to 15 after a Jamie Katuna basket from long range to go into halftime with a 41-26 advantage.

The Tritons started the second period the same way they started the game, with an Anderson three-pointer to go up by 18. UCSD eventually nabbed a 20 point advantage, 61-41, after Shokoor found Webster for a layup with 9:04 remaining in the game.

The deficit was insurmountable for SSU as the Tritons secured the 24-point victory with a Mounier three with 17 seconds remaining.

"I think we played in an excellent offensive rhythm and we got very good defensive stops," said UCSD head coach Heidi VanDerveer. "We are very deep and when its a second game of a weekend back-to-back or a Thursday-Saturday, it benefits us. We do have two or three at each position that can contribute in different ways."

The Tritons had 11 total players scoring at least one point and a bench that came alive as they outscored the Seawolves' non-starters 47-18.

Shokoor grabbed her 12th double-double of the season with a 13 point, 12 rebound performance. Webster came off the bench and scored 13 points as well. Anderosn scored 11 points, going 75 percent (3-4) from three-point range.

SSU was led by Molly Donovan's game-high 15 points.

UCSD return to RIMAC Arena to face Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, Feb. 20. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
