Tritons Can't Keep Up With Toros, Defeated 69-45

CARSON, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's basketball team was outscored 36-18 in the second half as the Tritons fell to Cal State Dominguez Hills, 69-45, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play Tuesday at the Torodome.

With the loss, UCSD drops to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Toros improve to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the CCAA.

The Tritons came out of the gates slow and trailed 7-3 to start the game. UCSD answered back and ended the first quarter leading 13-11 after two consecutive three-pointers made by junior guard Haley Anderson and freshman guard Joleen Yang.

CSUDH's Kielyn Wilson took over in the second period as she scored six points give the Toros the lead. UCSD equaled the score, 20-20, thanks to senior forward Farrah Shokoor's layup. It would be the closest the Tritons would get as CSUDH led from that point forward. The Toros closed out the quarter on a 13-7 run to lead UCSD 33-27 at halftime.

The Tritons cut the margin to five, 39-34, in the middle of the third frame after two free throws from senior guard Jamie Katuna. Cal State Dominguez Hills ended the period with another run, this time outscoring UCSD 10-0, to take a 15-point advantage into the final quarter.

The Tritons allowed 20 points in the fourth period, including 13 from Breanna Garcia, and were only able to muster 11 points themselves.

Katuna scored a team-high 14 points and Yang added 12. Shokoor grabbed a team-best nine rebounds.

Garcia led CSUDH with 29 points and Monay Lee chipped in 17. Wilson recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.

The Tritons will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Azusa Pacific for the Northwest Classic. UCSD will take on Seattle Pacific on Friday, Nov. 20 at 3 p.m. and Western Washington on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 5 p.m.
