Tritons Drop Chico State, 86-57, to Win Third Straight

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's basketball team shot 53 percent (35-66) from the floor and limited Chico State to 32.7 percent (17-52) shooting as the Tritons defeated the visiting Wildcats, 86-57, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup Saturday at RIMAC Arena.

With its third-straight win, UCSD is one game over .500 overall at 6-5 and 4-2 in the CCAA. Chico State drops to 4-6 overall and 1-5 in the conference.

The Tritons got off to an early 10-2 lead, with six of the points coming from Farrah Shokoor layups. UCSD would not give up the lead and forced the Wildcats to play from behind for the rest of the game.

Chico State closed the margin to three with 13:42 left in the first half after Michelle Walker stole the ball from Shokoor and layed it up on the other end. The Tritons answered right back and increased the gap to 10 points, 40-30, at halftime.

In the second half, UCSD kept the offensive onslaught going as they outscored Chico, 46-27, to cruise to the 29-point victory.

The Tritons outscored Chico State 54-20 in the paint and outrebounded the Wildcats 45-27. Additionally, UCSD had 14 second chance points compared to Chico State's five.

Shokoor led the way for the Tritons as she scored a game-high 24 points on 10-for-11 shooting and narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds. She also added four assists, four steals and a block in just 23 minutes of play.

The UCSD bench came alive as the reserves scored 49 combined points, led by Jamie Katuna and Cassie MacLeod who scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Hannah Womack was Chico State's top scorer with 13 points.

UC San Diego hosts CCAA opponent Sonoma State on Friday, Jan. 9. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
