Tritons Defeat Cal Poly Pomona, 62-50

LA JOLLA, Calif. - With the game knotted 28-28 at halftime, UC San Diego outscored Cal Poly Pomona 34-22 in the second stanza to win 62-50 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's basketball match-up Sunday at RIMAC Arena.

UCSD improves its record to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the CCAA while CPP drops to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

The Tritons came out of the gates fast as they quickly nabbed a 9-2 advantage capped off by a pair of Farrah Shokoor layups. UCSD eventually extended to a 13-point lead, the biggest in the first period, after a Shokoor mid-range shot to make the score 19-6 with 8:31 left.

The Broncos would answer back and go on a 22-9 run to end the half and go into the locker room tied, 28-28.

The Tritons started the second half strong, outscoring CPP 14-2 in the first nine minutes, with a Cassie MacLeod three-pointer coming at the end of the run. UCSD grabbed its biggest lead, 59-41, with 4:02 left in the game and cruised the rest of the way after Miranda Seto found Shokoor for the open shot from three-point range.

Shokoor notched her fourth double-double of the season and ended the game with 28 points and 15 rebounds. She was the only Triton player in double digits. As a team, UCSD shot 41.5 percent (22-53) from the floor and 30 percent (6-20) from behind the arc.

Defensively, the Tritons were able to contain CPP's Jada Blackwell, who came into the game averaging 22.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, to just two points and three boards. Ashley Lovett led the Broncos with 12 points and 16 rebounds.

UCSD's next game will come in the new year as it hosts Cal State Stanislaus on Friday, Jan. 2 at RIMAC Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
