No. 1 UCSD Secures Four-Game Sweep of Cal State Stanislaus

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The top-ranked UC San Diego softball team completed its four-game sweep of Cal State Stanislaus with wins of 8-0 and 2-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Saturday afternoon at Triton Softball Field. UCSD also won both legs of Friday's doubleheader, 4-1 and 5-4.

The series sweep marks UCSD's second this season; the Tritons took four games from Northwest Nazarene on February 3 and 4. UCSD snapped the three-game losing streak it endured last weekend to No. 15 Chico State to improve to 9-3 overall and 5-3 in the CCAA. CSUS drops to 4-12 and 0-3 in conference play.

"It feels really good to get these wins. The team played well and everybody contributed," said UCSD head coach Patti Gerckens.

Camille Gaito (6-1) turned in a two-hit complete game shutout in the opening game as the Tritons took the win via run-rule in the bottom of the sixth inning. Gaito didn't walk a batter and didn't allow a Warrior base runner past second base. Her ERA now stands at 1.31.

Mya Romero continued her scorching series with a pair of doubles in back-to-back at-bats in the first and third innings, driving-in Kirsten Willmon on each occasion. Up 2-0 in the fourth, Kris Lesovsky scored Maria Sykes on an infield hit before Willmon followed with a triple to right field to drive-in Lesovsky.

Meanwhile, Gaito was on cruise control, retiring the Warriors in order between the third and fifth innings.

Leading by five, UCSD was basically handed its final three runs of the day in the sixth inning. The Tritons put runners on first and second after CSUS shortstop Brittney Rickles couldn't handle a throw from second baseman Sarah Locarnini. Romero sent a grounder in Rickles' direction on the next play, but the shortstop bobbled it to allow UCSD to load the bases.

Caitlin Brown cracked a single through the left side, scoring Emily McQuaid and Willmon to give the Tritons a seven-run lead. Nicole Spangler finished it off, lacing a double into the left field gap to drive-in Romero and hand the Tritons the 8-0 run-rule victory.

Lesovsky led off game two with a solo home run to left field, the first of the season and 25th of her career. She ranks second all-time on UCSD's career home run list.

Sykes doubled with one out in the fourth inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Charly Swanberg, who did not appear in the first three games of the series, fell behind 0-2 to Natalie Rendon but ended up working the count back to 3-2. Swanberg then blooped a single into centerfield, driving-in Sykes to hand UCSD a 2-0 lead.

Game two starter Michelle Escamilla (2-1) worked herself out of a jam in the top of the fifth inning after loading the bases with no out. She got Lauren Liming to strike out looking and forced Jordan Flora to pop out to third base, but fell behind to clean-up hitter Vanessa Del Toro 3-1 with the bases jacked and two-down.

Gerckens paid a visit to Escamilla in the circle before the junior's next delivery.

"I said you know what, you've had this girl [Del Toro] all day. Just keep throwing your stuff, you've got great stuff going. She took a deep breath and just rolled on," said Gerckens.

Escamilla fired a curve on the next pitch, forcing Del Toro into a high fly ball that rested cleanly in Spangler's glove at first base.

Escamilla gave way to Gaito in the top of the sixth after the Warriors put runners on first and second with one out. Gaito struck out Brittani Weatherford on three pitches but Sarah Locarnini tagged Gaito for an RBI double down the left field line to make it 2-1. Gaito recovered by forcing Rachel Borges into a ground out to end the inning. Then, she retired the Warriors in order in the top of the seventh to secure the save.

Sykes received the first four starts of her career at second base over the weekend and led the Tritons with a .625 (5-for-8) batting average and .769 (10-for-13) on-base percentage. She walked four times, scored twice, and contributed a run and an RBI. Lesovsky was 4-for-10 with five runs scored. Romero tallied six RBI, three runs and three doubles while hitting .364 (4-for-11).

UCSD faces Cal Baptist on Monday, February 20 in a non-conference doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.
