ARCATA, Calif. - Daisy Feder hit the go-ahead three-pointer
with 14 seconds remaining to lift the UC San Diego women's basketball team to 63-61
come-from-behind victory over conference rival Humboldt State on Saturday
evening at Lumberjack Arena.
The Tritons trailed
by three points with less than two minutes to play, but closed the game on a
7-2 run to end a three-game losing streak against the Lumberjacks and even the
season series at one game apiece.
UCSD improves to 12-9
on the season and 10-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with the
win. The Tritons, who also defeated Sonoma State on Thursday evening, picked up
a pair of huge road victories this week after losing to Cal State San
Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona at home last week.
Head coach Charity Elliott squad is currently tied with Chico State for the fourth spot in the
league standings, three games behind first place Cal State Monterey Bay with
eight regular season games remaining.
Junior center Lauren Freidenberg tallied her fourth double-double of the season -- and the second
and three games -- with game-highs of 20 points and 17 rebounds to pace the
Tritons. She was 9-for-20 from the field and also tallied a blocked shot and
two steals. Feder finished with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including 3-of-4
from behind the three-point line.
Bree Halsely and
Kayla Williams scored 10 points apiece to lead Humboldt State (10-8, 7-7 CCAA).
Halsey also finished with a team-high eight rebounds, while Williams dished out
three assists.
After trailing by as
many as nine points in the opening half, UCSD was in control for most of the second
stanza, leading by five on four occasions. The last of those came following
back-to-back baskets from Friedenberg that put the Tritons in front 56-51 with
3:44 left to play.
Halsey answered with
a layup on the other end for the Lumberjacks, sparking an 8-0 HSU run over the
next two minutes that put the home team in front, 59-56, with 1:42 remaining.
Elaina White hit a
jumper for UCSD and Friedenberg followed with another big basket to give the
lead back to the Tritons, 60-59. Jeannette DeWitt drew a foul for the
Lumberjacks on the ensuing possession and calmly sank both free throws to set
the table for Feder's heroics.
With the shot clock
winding down and the Tritons trailing by one, Nicole Anderson-Jew found Feder
coming off a screen and the junior guard rose up and knocked down her fourth
triple of the game, putting the Tritons on top by two, 63-61, with 14 ticks
left.
The Lumberjacks would
get two more cracks in the final 10 seconds, but Halsey missed a mid-range
jumper and DeWitt's potential game-winning three missed the mark.
UCSD shot just 34% in
the game, but hit 8-of-19 from beyond the arc and recorded 17 assists on 24
field goals. The Tritons also turned in a dominant performance on the glass,
54-38.
Humboldt State shot
37% for the game and held a 28-24 edge in points in the paint.
The Tritons had lost
four of their past five meetings with the Lumberjacks, including a
heartbreaking double overtime decision on December 19 in La Jolla. HSU was also
responsible for eliminating UCSD from both the CCAA Tournament and NCAA West
Regional in 2009-10.
UCSD's victory came
on a night when Chelsea Carlisle, the CCAA's second-leading scorer, finished
with just nine points on 2-of-10 shooting. She did grab five boards and dish
out a game-high eight assists.
Winners of 10 of
their last 13 games, the Tritons will now return to RIMAC Arena for four
straight beginning next week. UCSD will take on San Francisco State on
Thursday, before entertaining league leader Cal State Monterey Bay on Spirit
Night Saturday.
