COMPTON, Calif. - The No. 1 ranked UC San Diego baseball team defeated Hawaii Pacific 12-0 in NCAA West Regional first-round action at the MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton.
Tim Shibuya earned his single-season school record 12th win of the year, and the Tritons jumped out to a 7-0 lead through three frames and cruised to the win.
Kellen Lee drove in four RBI, while
Grant Bauer added three RBI for the Tritons who improved to 49-7.
"That was a complete team win and a great way to set the tone for the tournament," said head coach Dan O'Brien.
Shibuya finished the day going 8.0 innings, allowing just five hits, no runs, no walks and struck out five. Shibuya threw 89 pitches and improved to 12-2 on the year. The junior right hander lowered his ERA to 1.95. Shibuya's 12 wins this season is a new single-season UCSD record. It breaks the old mark of 11 wins held by Logan Boutilier and current teammate Kirby St. John.
Lee went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI. It was his two-out first inning double that put the Tritons on top by a 4-0 score.
Kyle Saul went 3-for-5 with a double, triple and scored three times. Danny Susdorf finished the day going 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Brandon Gregorich also had a three hit day and added his 80th RBI of the year.
After Shibuya retired the side in order in the first, Albitz led off the UCSD first with a walk while Saul reached on a bunt single. Bauman followed with an RBI single to center for the Tritons first run. Gregorich followed with an RBI single to left for the 2-0 lead. With two outs, Lee came through with a two-RBI double to center for the 4-0 lead through the first inning.
The Tritons had another two-out rally in the third inning as Lee had a two-out RBI. Bauer followed with a two-RBI double to the right field corner and the Tritons led 7-0 through three.
In the UCSD sixth with two outs, Saul hit a deep drive to center that ended up being a triple and Saul would come around to score as the centerfielder bobbled the ball for the 8-0 lead.
In the UCSD seventh, Susdorf, Lee and Bauer had RBI to give the Tritons 11 runs.
Saul had a double in the eighth inning and would come around and score on an error to give UCSD the final 12-0 win.
Elias Tuma pitched the final scoreless frame for the Tritons.
The loss went to HPU's Calen O'Meara who dropped to 6-2.
Offensively for the Sea Warriors, HPU had five different hitters record its hits.
UCSD advances to the NCAA West Regional winners bracket and will face the winner of the Cal State Dominguez Hills vs. Chico State match-up. The Tritons will play at 6:00 p.m. on Friday night at the MLB Urban Youth Academy.
