Tritons Hit 10 Threes In 75-43 Drubbing of Cal State L.A.

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Chelsea Carlisle scored a game-high 19 points and Tiffany Hunter finished with 11, guiding the eighth-ranked UC San Diego women's basketball team to a convincing 75-43 triumph over visiting Cal State L.A. on Saturday night at RIMAC Arena. The Tritons put together an impressive 28-0 run spanning both periods to down the Golden Eagles and win their fifth straight.

UCSD's offense struggled early against a zone defense from CSULA, but the Tritons found their mark, connecting on a season-high 10 three-pointers and shooting better than 46% from the field to sweep the season series.

UCSD improves to 19-1 overall in 2009-10 and 14-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, winning by double digits for the third consecutive game. The Tritons went 4-0 during a four-game homestand the last two weeks and now hold a perfect 12-0 record at RIMAC Arena this season.

Cal State L.A. suffered its sixth straight defeat, falling to 4-17 overall and 2-14 in the CCAA.

Carlisle led the three-point barrage for UCSD, hitting 5-of-11 attempts from behind the arc and 7-of-15 overall, while Emily Osga hit all three of her attempts from downtown for nine points. Hunter was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and added six rebounds, two assists, and two steals to go with her 11 points.

After scoring a season-best 42 points in Thursday' 83-57 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Triton reserves had another strong performance, tallying 30 points against the Golden Eagles. In addition to Osga's nine, Leilani Martin added seven and Erin Grady finished with six.

UCSD's defense held CSULA without a point for the final five minutes of the first half and nearly six minutes into second, while the offense turned a tie game into a 47-19 lead. Consecutive threes from Osga followed by a Martin layup made it 60-24 with 11:31 remaining and Daisy Feder hit a pair of free throws two minutes later to give UCSD its biggest lead at 63-26.

The Tritons shot 57% in the second half, converting 17-of-30 attempts from the floor and 7-of-13 from behind the arc. The Golden Eagles shot just over 36% for the game, 17-of-47.

Jazzi Johnson was the only player to reach double figures for Cal State L.A., coming off the bench to score 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Sonia Miller finished with nine points, while Stacie Whitely added six points and eight boards.

The Golden Eagles hung around for much of the first half, tying the game at 19 following a three-pointer by Miller with 5:04 left. It was all UCSD after that, as the Tritons scored the final 10 points of the period to take a 29-19 lead into the locker room. Carlisle and Ilg had triples during the stretch, as UCSD's offense began to find its rhythm.

The Tritons then carried the momentum into the second half, scoring the first 18 points of the period to put the game away. UCSD's lead never dipped below 27 the rest of the way.

The Tritons wore pink uniforms on Saturday in support of the WBCA Pink Zone, a global initiative to unify members of the women's basketball community to raise breast cancer awareness and raise funds towards scientific research.

UCSD will travel to Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State next week, before returning to RIMAC Arena to host Cal State East Bay on February 16.
