Tritons Topple Golden Eagles For 14th Consecutive Win

LOS ANGELES ? The 12th-ranked UC San Diego women's basketball team won its 14th straight game with a convincing 84-66 victory over Cal State L.A. Saturday at the Eagles Nest. The Tritons led 51-26 at the half and never looked back, recording their sixth consecutive victory over the Golden Eagles. Michelle Osier led all scorers with 25 points, while Leilani Martin finished with a season-high 17 in the win.

UCSD improves to 21-2 overall and remained unbeaten in California Collegiate Athletic Association play at 14-0. The Tritons, who have already locked up a spot in the CCAA Tournament, are two wins shy of tying the program's all-time mark for consecutive victories ? 16 ? that was set in 1997-98. Head coach Charity Elliott's squad has won 20 of its last 22 league games, dating back to last season.

Cal State L.A. falls to 3-18 overall and 2-12 in the CCAA, suffering its seventh defeat in the last eight games.

Shooting under 25% from the field over the last four games, Osier regained her stroke against the Golden Eagles, hitting 9-of-16 shots from the floor and all six of her free throws. The three-time All-CCAA First Team selection also hauled in a game-high seven rebounds and recorded three steals.

Martin had reached double figures just twice in UCSD's last 14 games, but finished with 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting for her highest scoring output as a Triton. The junior transfer from Foothill College, who also grabbed five boards and dished out two assists, scored 13 points in the win at Sonoma State last weekend.

Chelsea Carlisle, the reigning CCAA Player of the Week, bounced back from an off night against Cal State Dominguez Hills to score 15 points to go with three assists.

Amber Whittington finished with 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting to pace the Golden Eagles, while Shyneese Walter added 15.

UCSD shot 47.4% (17-57) for the game, while CSULA finished at a 46.9% clip, hitting 23-of-49 shots.

The Tritons scored 36 points off 29 Golden Eagle turnovers, the most by a UCSD opponent this season.

After wrapping up their road trip with a perfect 4-0 mark, the Triton will return to RIMAC Arena for four straight beginning next weekend. UCSD will open its homestand against Cal Poly Pomona on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The Tritons defeated the Broncos 62-58 on January 10.
