UCSD Falls To Cal State San Bernardino, Suffers First CCAA Loss, 64-59

LA JOLLA, Calif. ? Lisa Takata scored 16 points and Jaclyn Rainville finished with 15 and 16 rebounds as visiting Cal State San Bernardino upended No. UC San Diego 64-59 Saturday night at RIMAC Arena. The Coyotes held the Tritons to just 35% shooting for the game, handing UCSD its first loss in California Collegiate Athletic Association play this season.

The Tritons (22-3, 15-1 CCAA) lost for the first time since December 19 and had won a season-high 15 games in a row since falling to St. Mary's two months ago. UCSD's 15-game winning streak goes down as the second-longest in program history, one shy of the program's all-time mark of 16 consecutive victories, set in 1996-97. The Tritons last loss in CCAA play came on February 23, 2008 at Cal Poly Pomona.

After upsetting the Broncos 54-51 in Pomona on Wednesday night, Cal State San Bernardino (9-13, 7-9 CCAA) became just the third team to defeat the Tritons in 2008-09 on Saturday. The Broncos' two wins this week come on the heels of a nine-game skid from January 9-February 7.

The Coyotes shot 50% (12-24) in the first half and finished at 43.4% (23-53) for the game, fending off the Tritons' attempts at a comeback at every turn. CSUSB shot 7-of-17 from the three-point line, three of which came during a decisive five minute stretch in the second half when the Coyotes turned a 37-35 lead into a 51-42 advantage with 7:56 to play

After Chelsea Carlisle's layup brought UCSD to within two, Shannon Gholar hit a three and Takata hit a jumper to put the visitors in front by six, 42-36. Alexis Gaskin scored inside two minutes later, but Emily Vore converted a three-point play on the other end, before Ana Onaindia's triple at the 7:56 mark gave the Coyotes their biggest advantage of the game at 51-42.

UCSD closed to within five on two free throws from Leilani Martin with 5:54 to play, but Takata answered for San Bernardino, getting to the rim on the ensuing trip. Michelle Osier's free throws made it 58-53 with 2:41 on the clock, but Onaindia responded once again, draining a three from the top of the circle.

The Tritons cut the deficit to just four points with 25 seconds remaining on another layup from Carlisle, but it was too little too late, as the Coyotes converted six free throws down the stretch to put the game away.

Takata hit 8-of-10 shots from the field, while Rainville converted 6-of-12 from the floor, including 2-for-4 from behind the arc. Vore finished with 13 points in just eight minutes, while Onaindia scored all 12 of her points on three-pointers.

Gaskin scored a game-high 22 points and hauled in 10 rebounds for the Tritons, hitting 10-of-18 shots from the field. Osier also finished with a double-double, tallying 12 points and 10 boards, but UCSD's stellar front court play wasn't enough. Carlisle scored 11 points and dished out seven assists, while Martin finished with 10 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

UCSD shot just 33% (9-27) in the decisive second half and finished 21-of-60 for the game. The Tritons outscored the Coyotes 36-20 in the paint, but CSUSB's bench outscored the UCSD reserves 18-1.

The Tritons will look to bounce back when they face San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay in the final two home games of the regular season.
