UCSD Stays Perfect In CCAA Play With 86-84 OT Victory At Humboldt State

ARCATA, Calif. ? Playing in its second overtime contest in as many nights, the 17th-ranked UC San Diego women's basketball team scored the final six points of the game to escape with an 86-84 conference win over Humboldt State Saturday night at Lumberjack Gym. Chelsea Carlisle was brilliant once again, scoring a game-high 30 points, including the game-winning basket as time expired.

After defeating Sonoma State 78-69 in overtime on Friday night, the Tritons needed more late-game heroics to get past the Lumberjacks on Saturday. UCSD improves to 19-2 overall and 12-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, winning its 12th game in a row and 18th in the last 19. The Tritons sweep the season series from the Lumberjacks, who fall to 13-6 overall and 8-4 in the CCAA.

Humboldt led 76-68 with 1:04 remaining in regulation, before Carlisle knocked down her third triple of the game to start the Triton rally. Alexis Gaskin converted a three-point play to bring UCSD to within 76-74 13 seconds later and Michelle Osier sank a pair of free throws to tie the game with 33 seconds left.

After Brittney Taylor was fouled and converted two at the line with 10 seconds left on the clock, Gaskin hit a baseline jumper on the Tritons' final possession to send the game to overtime.

The home team scored six straight points in the extra session to take an 84-80 advantage with with 1:51 remaining, but UCSD would respond once again. Carlisle and Osier converted two free throws apiece to tie the game at 84-84 and the Tritons came up with consecutive steals to set up the final the play.

Carlisle, who hit the shot that sent Friday night's game into overtime, came up big again, draining a two-handed, over-the-shoulder jumper with no time remaining on the clock to deliver the victory for the Tritons.

After scoring a career-high 23 against the Seawolves on Friday, Carlisle finished 9-of-20 from the field and a perfect 9-for-9 at the free throw line on the way to 30 points in just her second-career start on Saturday. She also finished with seven rebounds, two assists, and five steals.

Carlisle's performance marked the highest scoring output by a Triton this season.

Gaskin finished with 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting, while Osier tallied 15 points, nine rebounds, and a season-high six steals. Annette Ilg finished with 11 points, three boards, three assists, and four steals.

UCSD shot 45% for the game, hitting 30-of-67 shots, including 15-of-29 in the second half.

Taylor scored 25 points and hauled in 16 rebounds to pace the Lumberjacks. Katie Franci also finished with a double-double, tallying 14 points and 18 boards, while Jennifer Enos scored 10 points and dished out five assists.

Humboldt State shot 39% (31-80) for the game and controlled the glass, 57-34.

The Tritons will return to action next Friday, February 6 at Cal State Dominguez Hills as their road trip continues. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
