LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's basketball team got all of its points from the starting five during the 75-64 victory over visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday evening in RIMAC Arena. With the win the Tritons improve to 19-7 overall and 11-5 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play while the Toros fall to 12-11 overall and 6-10 in league action.
The two squads were very close at halftime as Meaghan Noud made two free throws with only one second remaining on the clock in the first half to give the Tritons a 33-31 lead at the break. Despite shooting 56% from the floor in the first half, CSUDH still trailed by two after committing 12 turnovers in the stanza that directly led to eight UCSD points.
In the second half, the Tritons would use an 8-2 run, that ended with two free throws by Michelle Osier at the 15:56 mark, to take a lead that would not dip below four points the rest of the way. After CSUDH got within four points at 52-48 with just over 10 minutes to play, UCSD would go on a 16-9 spurt, giving itself an 11-point lead that would not be challenged over the final 3:37 of regulation.
Noud led all scorers on the night with her 28 points. She made four of 11 from behind the 3-point line, giving her 65 treys made this season, the second highest single season total in program history. Erin Noonan and Alexis Gaskin would each score 14 while Osier added a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double. Alexis Mezzetta chipped in with six points and seven assists for the Tritons.
Jessica Liang led all CSUDH scorers with her 19 points in the loss. She made five of nine from long range while also handing out a team-high four assists. Ennish Kyles added a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double while Aujanee Baldwin added 12 to round out the Toros who scored in double digits.
UCSD head coach Charity Elliott and her squad will now head out on the road for the final four games of the 2007-08 regular season. The Tritons will begin the road trip with contests at Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona next Friday and Saturday evenings, respectively. Both contests are slated for 5:30 p.m. tip-offs.
