LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego women's basketball team posted a convincing 67-30 victory over visiting Cal State L.A. on Friday evening in RIMAC Arena. With the win the Tritons improve to 18-7 overall and 10-5 in CCAA play while dropping the Golden Eagles down to 8-14 overall and 5-11 in league action.
Both teams came out a little slow as UCSD held a 15-9 lead after the first 14 minutes, but a 10-0 Triton run before intermission gave them a 25-9 advantage at the break. The Golden Eagles were ice cold from the floor, making only three of 26 shots from the floor in the first stanza while the Tritons didn't fare much better, going 10-for-27 in the first 20 minutes of play.
Head coach Charity Elliott's squad left little doubt as to the outcome early in the second half, pushing the lead out to 49-16 with just under 13 minutes to play in regulation. That advantage would grow to as many as 35 before the benches were emptied.
Meaghan Noud led all scorers with 22 points on the night for UCSD. She played 23 minutes and came out having scored seven more points at the time than the entire CSULA squad. Michelle Osier added nine points and eight boards while Alexis Mezzetta chipped in with three points, six boards and a game-high nine assists.
Ashley Kitchen led the Golden Eagles with eight points while Amber Whittington pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
CSULA finished the game with a .277 shooting percentage, making only 13 of 47 shots from the floor on the evening. Conversely, the Tritons made 24 of 50, including a 6-for-13 performance from long range.
UCSD returns to the floor tomorrow evening, hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills. Tip-off is set for 5:35 p.m. and will be preceded by a brief senior day ceremony to honor the Tritons' eight out-going senior student-athletes.
