Tritons Fend Off Humboldt State, WIn CCAA Opener 69-66

Women's Basketball UCSD

Sonoma State Shocks No. 12 UC San Diego by 17 Points on Friday Evening

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Rain and a power outage on the Sonoma State campus in northern California forced Friday night's basketball games between UC San Diego and SSU to be moved to the Santa Rosa Junior College campus. That move took away the Seawolves' home court advantage but not their desire for an upset as their women's team shocked 12th-ranked UC San Diego by a 58-41 margin to improve to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in CCAA play while dropping the Tritons to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in league action.

The first half was a nip and tuck affair as both teams led at one point during the stanza before SSU entered the intermission with a slim 25-22 lead. That advantage quickly grew to 13 as the Seawolves began the second half on a 12-2 run and never looked back en route to handing the Tritons their worst loss since suffering a 93-66 loss at Chico State back on January 8, 2005.

Current CCAA Player of the Week Danae Wellander scored a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Seawolves while Lauren Redfield added 13 points eight boards and four assists. Chelsey Armacost chipped in with 11 points and four rebounds.

Alexis Gaskin and Michelle Osier each scored 12 points in the loss for the Tritons while Meaghan Noud added 10. Osier pulled down a team-high eight rebounds while Alexis Mezzetta dished out a game-high seven assists.

The 41 points for UCSD was a season low and came on an 18-for-59 performance from the field. The Tritons made only four of 17 shots from long range and were out-rebounded by a 43-30 margin on the night. Additionally, first year head coach Charity Elliott's squad only got to the free throw line once while SSU went 17-for-20 from the charity stripe.

UC San Diego will now make the long drive north to Arcata for a Saturday night matchup with Humboldt State. That game is slated for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off inside East Gym on the HSU campus.
