LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 20th-ranked UC San Diego women's basketball team rallied from a 10 point second half deficit only to come up short in a 66-61 loss to visiting Cal Poly Pomona on Friday night in RIMAC Arena. With the loss the Tritons fall to 12-5 overall and 4-3 in CCAA play while the Broncos improve to 7-7 overall and 4-4 in league action.
UCSD never held a lead until the 11:54 mark of the second half as an Alexis Gaskin jumper capped off a 12-1 run, giving the Tritons a 44-43 advantage. The Tritons would push that lead up to five points with 6:15 to go, but the Broncos rallied with a 10-3 run over the next four minutes and never looked back.
Reyana Colson led three CPP players in double figure scoring with her 16 points while also pulling down eight rebounds. Andrew Ohlssen added 14 points while teammate Vanessa Dominguez chipped in with 11 despite being in foul trouble for most of the second half. Natasha Reed grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to go along with her six points in 21 minutes of action.
UCSD's Michelle Osier led all players on the night with her 17 points and 19 rebounds. The 19 boards ties her career-high as nine came on the offensive end. Meaghan Noud contributed 12 points while Erin Noonan and Alexis Mezzetta added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Tritons shot a meager 34.4% from the floor, including a 4-for-15 performance from long range. The Broncos made only two of 14 from beyond the arc but were able to make 37.5% of their shots from the field en route to the victory. UCSD was also out-rebounded by Cal Poly Pomona, pulling down 42 boards, three less than the Broncos.
Head coach Charity Elliott and her squad will return to action on Saturday night, hosting CCAA-leading Cal State San Bernardino at 5:30 p.m.
