LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? The 21st-ranked UC San Diego women's basketball team held on for a 60-59 victory at Cal State L.A. on Saturday evening in the Eagles' Nest on the CSULA campus in Los Angeles. With the win the Tritons improve to 12-4 overall and 4-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play while the Golden Eagles fall to 4-8 overall and 1-5 in league action.
The game was nip and tuck throughout as there were 10 lead changes and six ties while no team held a double-digit advantage in the contest. Both teams used only eight players in the game as UCSD captured its fourth-straight victory over CSULA, a streak that dates back to the 2005-06 season.
Meaghan Noud led all scorers with her 17 points on the evening, making four of 11 shots from behind the arc while Michelle Osier added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomore Annette Ilg chipped in with a career-high eight points, making all three of her shots from the floor, including both attempts from beyond the 3-point line.
Jaemy Oda recorded a team-high 14 points in the loss for the Golden Eagles while Amber Whittington added 10 points. Yasmeen Herrera contributed six points and a game-high 13 rebounds in just less than 40 minutes of play.
As a team, the Tritons only managed to shoot around 32% from the floor and from long range, making eight of 25 3-point attempts while also making only half of their 16 charity shots. CSULA made 40% of its shots from the floor and eight of 10 from the foul line. The Golden Eagles committed 13 turnovers in the loss, five more than the Tritons.
First year head coach Charity Elliott and her squad will finally return home to RIMAC Arena for their next four games, hosting Cal Poly Pomona next Friday night and Cal State San Bernardino the following evening. UCSD will then host San Francisco State on January 25th and CSU Monterey Bay on January 26th to conclude the four-game homestand. All four contests are slated for 5:30 p.m. tip-offs on the UCSD campus.
