TURLOCK, Calif. ? The No. 24-ranked UC San Diego softball team had its most successful season at the Division II level come to an end with a 2-0 loss to No. 3 Humboldt State in the third round of the NCAA West Regional. The Tritons also dropped an extra inning affair earlier this morning to No. 12 Cal State Stanislaus that forced the team into an elimination contest with the Lumberjacks.
HSU's Lizzy Prescott turned in another overpowering performance as she struck out 12 batters and improved to 33-4 on the season. The Lumberjacks now earned another date with Seattle ? their first round opponent ? later this afternoon. HSU is now 56-7 overall.
Prescott's strikeouts give her 745 for her career, which is now a HSU record for strikeouts in a career. Prescott, a junior, set the record in three seasons breaking the record previously held by Jessame Kendall.
Humboldt State got on the board in the first with a leadoff single by Carolyn Cameron, who came around and scored with two outs on a Marissa Slattery single to left. The Lumberjacks would add another run with a solo home run by Nancy Harbeson ? a sharply hit ball over the left field fence.
Slattery, who went 2-for-3 in the game, has been HSU's top offensive player in the tournament with a .455 average (5-for-11 with three RBIs), in three games.
UC San Diego finished the season with a 35-27 record. Starter Melissa Ward went six innings, allowing two runs on four hits and fanned six. Nicole Saari was 2-for-3 for the Tritons.
The 35 victories in 2007 ties a program record for the most wins in a single season. The last time that the Tritons reached that win plateau was in 2002, which was also the last time that the team qualified for the NCAA postseason.
