LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego baseball team swept a doubleheader from Regis on Saturday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field. In the first game, Chris Franco hit two homeruns and drove in five RBI as UCSD cruised to the 16-5 win. Nick Rodieck earned the win, pitching six innings of relief while allowing just one run on three hits. The second game was a pitchers battle, as UCSD's Jonathan Erickson hit a walk-off homerun to break the 1-1 tie with one gone in the final frame. In the 2-1 win, Trevor Decker went the distance, allowing one run and four hits, earning his first win of the year. UCSD improves to 7-4, while Regis drops to 4-4.
Game One UCSD 16-5
With two outs in the Triton first, Lawson singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Lawson then stole third and Clement walked. Imeson came through with the two out RBI through the right side, giving UCSD the 1-0 lead. Chris Franco then cleared the bases with a three-run homerun to leftfield, putting UCSD on top 4-0.
Regis scored its first run on a wild pitch in the second. Walker would score on Whatley's ground ball to bring Regis within 4-2. Regis would pull within one after a balk at 4-3.
In the UCSD third, Cantele led off with a homerun to right field. Lawson was hit and would score on Clement's double down the left field line, giving UCSD the 6-3 lead. Franco then homered over the center field wall, driving in two more for UCSD's 8-3 lead.
With two outs in the fifth, Roth tripled to center and would score on a wild pitch, 9-3 UCSD.
In the UCSD sixth, Morehead reached on a bunt single and Cantele reached on an error. Lawson then doubled, driving in Morehead for the 10-3 lead. With two outs, Imeson singled to left, picking up two RBI's and making it 12-3.
Brad Schumacher had an RBI double in the eighth for Regis.
UCSD added four more runs in the eighth to make the score 16-4.
Regis scored a run in the ninth for the final at 16-5.
Nick Rodieck earned the win in relief.
Game Two UCSD 2-1
Anthony Musielak put the first run of the game on the board with an RBI groundout to give Regis a 1-0 lead in the fifth.
In the UCSD fifth, Albitz reached on an error and would score on Morehead's double down the leftfield line, scoring Albitz, an unearned run, and the game was tied through five at 1-1.
In the Regis seventh, James Walker doubled and Brad Schumacher walked with one out. Decker then got a flyball and a strikeout to end the threat still tied at 1-1.
With one out in the seventh, Jonathan Erickson slammed a walk-off homerun over the left field fence, giving the Tritons the doubleheader sweep at 2-1. Trevor Decker earned the win, improving to 1-1 on the season.
UCSD and Regis conclude the four-game series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m. at Triton Baseball Field.
