LA JOLLA, Calif. ? Leora Juster scored a game-high 21 points to go along with six rebounds and nine assists to lead the UC San Diego women's basketball team to an 82-79 victory over visiting Cal State Stanislaus on Friday night in RIMAC Arena. With the win the Tritons improve to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play while the Warriors fall to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in league action.
Despite shooting only 6-for-20 from the floor on the night, Juster came through at the foul line, making 9-of-10 on the night including two with 10 seconds on the clock to close out the win for UCSD. With the win first year head coach Janell Jones' team ties the program's best start at the Division II level, equaling the 2003-04 team that also started out 7-2.
Hillary Hansen added 13 points, six boards and four assists while freshman Michelle Osier continued to impress, adding 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in the win for UCSD.
Cal State Stanislaus was paced on the night by Gwendolyn Page's 17 points. Lysandra Williams added 16 points and nine rebounds. Latricia Nickelberry chipped in with 15 points while Janet Oseguera rounded out the Warriors in double-digit scoring with 10 points on the night.
Both teams shot less than 50% from the floor on the evening. The difference came at the charity stripe where the Tritons went 14-for-15 while the Warriors made only 11-of-16. Additionally CSUS committed 25 turnovers on the night compared to only 15 from UC San Diego.
UCSD returns to action tomorrow evening, hosting 12th-ranked Chico State at 5:30 p.m. in RIMAC Arena. The Warriors travel to Cal State San Bernardino for a 5:30 p.m. tomorrow night in Coussoulis Arena.
