LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? Speed was a factor as the Cal State L.A. women's basketball team ran past UC San Diego, 80-70, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game Saturday night at the Eagles' Nest.
With the victory, the Golden Eagles extended their winning streak to five games and improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. UC San Diego dropped to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA.
Amber Fouse led Cal State L.A. with 18 points off the bench on a solid shooting night. She connected on 7 of 12 shots, including 4-for-7 from behind the arch. Shayne Stanley completed a strong weekend with 16 points, 5 assists and 6 steals to lead the Golden Eagles. Stanley led CSULA with 14 points in Friday's win over Cal State San Bernardino.
The Golden Eagles had a strong first half, thanks to their quickness on both ends of the court. CSULA jumped out to an 11-point lead in the first six minutes of the game and led by nine, 34-25 at the half. Cal State L.A.'s lead increased to 24 points, 60-36, with a Charmaine Utz layup with 12:35 to play in the second half.
CSULA led by 20 at 74-54 as late as 6:14 to go, but UC San Diego challenged the home team by going on a 14-2 run in the next four minutes to cut the lead to eight, at 76-68, with 2:21 to play. Monica Tokoro finally silenced the Tritons with a jumper and Stanley's fast-break lay-up with a minute to play sealed the win for the Golden Eagles.
Michelle Oster led UCSD with 19 points and 17 rebounds while Hillary Hansen added 17. Leora Juster and Kim Buffum tallied 57 points Friday night but were held to a total of 13 points (all by Juster) against Cal State L.A.
UCSD returns to action on Saturday, December 10 against Northwest Nazarene at 5:30 p.m. in RIMAC Arena. That game will be the Tritons final contest prior to the Christmas break. Head coach Janell Jones and her team will then return to CCAA play on Friday, January 6 at home against Cal State Stanislaus.
