LA JOLLA, Calif. ? Leora Juster led three UC San Diego players in double figure scoring with a game-high 23 points, as the Tritons cruised to a convincing 75-50 victory over the Northwest Nazarene University women's basketball team on Saturday evening in RIMAC Arena. The win pushes UCSD's record to 5-2 on the year while the Crusaders fall to 2-3.
Juster's points came on 8-for-14 shooting from the floor and a perfect 7-for-7 night at the free throw line. Fellow junior Hillary Hansen add 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists while sophomore Alexis Mezzetta chipped in with 10 points, three boards and three assists.
Head coach Janell Jones saw her team jump out to a 37-23 lead at halftime fueled by an 18-4 run over a six minute time span in the middle of the first stanza. UCSD continued to put on the pressure in the second half, going up by as many as 31 points with less than six minutes to go.
Danielle Dwello led the NNU offense with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds while Kara Gonzalez and Shaunt'e Nance each had 10.
As a team the Tritons shot 43.1% from the floor while limiting the Crusaders to a 31.3% clip overall, including a meager 14.3% (2-for-14) from the 3-point arc. NNU committed 26 turnovers, 10 more than the Tritons while UCSD had 15 steals compared to only four for the Crusaders.
UC San Diego returns to action on Tuesday, December 13 at Grand Canyon. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. in Antelope Gymnasium. Following that contest, the Tritons will have a nice long break for the holiday season, returning to the hardwood on Friday, January 6, hosting Cal State Stanislaus at 5:30 p.m. to open up the home league slate.
