UC San Diego placed 38 scholar-athletes on The Big West Winter All-Academic Team, as announced Tuesday by the conference office. The 38 honorees are more than any other Big West institution. The Winter All-Academic Team is composed of student-athletes from men's and women's basketball and men's and women's swimming and diving teams.   To be eligible, scholar-athletes must carry a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00, be at least a sophomore academically with one full year at the institution prior to this season and compete in 50 percent of their team's contests.   Triton senior swimmer Sabrina Bennani was highlighted for her perfect 4.0 GPA. Former UC San Diego standout point guard Hayden Gray has signed a multiyear contract with the Utah Jazz. Gray, the 2025 Big West Defensive Player of the Year, becomes the first Triton to reach the NBA.   In his final year as a Triton, Hayden Gray garnered recognition as The Big West's top defensive player and was a finalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year. Gray led the nation in steals in 2024-25 with 110. Gray spent the 2025-26 season with the Maine Celtics in the NBA G League. The San Diego native appeared in 48 games (23 starts) for the Celtics, averaging 9.9 points, 5.8 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 steals in 27.9 minutes per game. Lily Hermosillo didn't set out to be an anomaly. She grew up 25 minutes from UC San Diego's La Jolla campus, in Chula Vista, the daughter of a father who played college baseball and a mother who played softball. By the time she arrived at UC San Diego as a freshman, the sport was as familiar to her as the Southern California sun. Finishing her degree in three years was not part of her plan. "I didn't come into college planning on graduating early," she says. "I finished my sophomore year, and I was like, oh, I think I could maybe finish it this year. UC San Diego junior Aidan Burke has been named to the Academic All-District Team as announced by College Sports Communicators (CSC) on Tuesday. Burke is an honoree at UC San Diego for the second consecutive season.   Aidan Burke (Los Gatos, Calif.) is a business economics major with a 3.84 grade point average. On the court, Burke played in all 34 games this season, making 17 starts. UC San Diego junior Tom Beattie scored a career-high 22 points, but No. 4 CSUN earned an 80-70 win over the fifth-seed Tritons in The Big West quarterfinal Thursday night at Lee's Family Forum. Beattie hit eight field goals and five three-pointers on the night to pace the Tritons, who fell to 23-11.   CSUN (20-13) was led by Larry Hughes II. He hit 14-of-25 field goal tries and scored a game high 34 points in the win. The Matadors advance to Friday's semifinal, where they'll face top-seed UC Irvine.   Beattie was one of three in double figures for the Tritons Thursday. Freshman Hudson Mayes poured in 17 – 14 after halftime – with five rebounds and four assists. UC San Diego is back in action Thursday in the Credit Union 1 Big West Championship at Lee's Family Forum. After a comeback win over Cal Poly in Wednesday's opening round, the Tritons (23-10) will take on No. 4 CSUN in quarterfinal Thursday at 6 p.m. With Wednesday's win, the Tritons have won seven of their last eight games. UC San Diego has won 13 games outside of La Jolla – including a 5-0 mark in neutral site games (and two victories in this building this season).   The Matadors (19-13) were part of a three-way tie in The Big West with UC San Diego and Cal State Fullerton. CSUN is paced by Big West Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year Josiah Davis.   CSUN swept the two regular season meetings between these squads – both of which took place in January.
