In Their Own Words: Amelia Harrison

When I first arrived at UC San Diego as a member of the fencing team, I had no idea what to expect.

Fencing is an individual sport, for the most part. Although fencers sometimes participate in team events, at the end of the day, you are the only one physically on the strip. As a result, I was picturing an environment much like that of a club - we would come together to train, but ultimately, we would be competing for our own sakes. Instead, what I found was entirely different. The team welcomed me with open arms and from day one, I felt like I was part of something bigger than myself. During the first team competition I participated in with my squad, we took the bronze medal at the North American Cup. I was blown away by the sense of camaraderie it brought. Before that tournament, I had never had people in my corner cheering me on like that, and when I stood on the podium, wearing the UC San Diego colors, I knew I wanted to keep chasing that feeling.

Every new season has brought new challenges and new faces; every year has been unique. I have served as a Squad Captain, a Team Captain, and an Academic Captain, and each role has given me a new perspective on leadership that I will carry with me long after I have left the team. Through it all, I feel I have become the best athlete I can be, with the continued support of my coaches, my teammates, and my friends. The hours of literal blood, sweat, and tears paid off in my most recent season, where I had the best Regionals result of my career and qualified for NCAA Nationals. I couldn't believe it at first, because truthfully, I hadn't thought I would ever make it. I was incredibly excited to represent the team, up until the season was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Although I am still disappointed to have lost my one chance to compete at Nationals, I am grateful more than anything. I have been lucky to get not only a great season, but a great four years with the team, and I am incredibly proud of everything we have achieved. This team has been the most impactful part of my undergraduate experience - sometimes exasperating, sometimes hilarious, but always amazing - ever since I first set foot in Main Gym. That feeling of overwhelming pride in not only myself, but in them, has not faded since that first time standing beside my teammates on the podium. I can't wait to see what they accomplish next.

To those continuing their journeys on the team, I can only say one thing - thank you for being my family.
