Tritons Compete in ITA Regionals, Becky Chou Represents in Semifinal Match
AZUSA, Calif. – The University of California San Diego women’s tennis team competed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) West Regional Championships this past weekend to kickoff the 2019 fall campaign. Hosted by Azusa Pacific University (APU), the action began Thursday, Oct. 3 and concluded Saturday Oct. 5.
In the initial round of 64, UC San Diego had all five returners participate.
Senior Becky Chou advanced the farthest among Tritons, winning four straight matches in a row, sufficient for a spot in the final four. Entering the tournament as the number six seed, Chou battled past Concordia-Irvine counterpart 6-3, 7-6(6) in the opening round. She would later go on to beat Stanislaus State opponent in two sets 6-1, 6-4 and Colorado Mesa opponent in three 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.
Chou defeated APU contestant and number three seed by a score of 3-6, 1-6, 10-8, an effort that placed her in the semifinal round. Ultimately, she would fall to fellow APU opponent and eventual champion, Anna Savchenko, with a match score of 6-2, 6-0.
Senior Valeria Corral sailed easily through her first match, dominating Biola opponent 6-0, 6-0. She would drop to Savchenko as well 6-2, 6-1 in the following competition.
Redshirt senior Chloe Wight put up a fight against Concordia-Irvine rival but fell just short in the super tiebreaker 1-6, 7-6(4), 11-9. In addition, sophomores Anu Bhadada and Shweta Kumar both lost their first rounds to Fresno Pacific (6-3, 6-2) and Dominican (6-2, 6-5) contestants, respectively.
Chou and Kumar established a two seed heading into the doubles tournament. The duo lost in the first round to a pair of Holy Names foes, 8-4.
The Tritons will conclude their fall season with the alumni match during Homecoming Weekend on Saturday, Oct. 19 in La Jolla, Calif.
